Wonder if it'll work with my setup...no coax in this room...
For ethernet- there's an Airport Express providing a port...
The express is extending an Extreme which is doing the wireless routing instead of the Actiontec..

that's because the Xbox actually powers off completely, unlike any modern digital box or PVR

Haha well yeah, and I wouldn't have an issue with it if this particular device didn't have something built in to store that data without power, like a hard disk.

Only lasts for a month I think.

So my mother in law is switching to Optik from regular Shaw and the installer is coming on Tuesday. I am planning to be there for the install because I want to make sure it gets done right. Now, since I have Bell I have no idea what to check for in what the installer is doing. Are there any questions or specific things that people who have had the install done think that I should bring up with the installer before he goes so we don't have to call later? I need this to be as smooth as a transition as possible. It is only one HD TV in one spot and a little CRT in another. She already has Telus phone and internet. Any help would be appreciated. I also am sort of using her as a test for me to see if I will switch if/when my 9242 PVR gives up the ghost.

I think Telus installer people aren't exactly the brightest. In my parents house they've had over 4 technicians come and none of them could figure out the problem (tv would often black out). Each technician re-wired the system to how they thought it should be often saying the previous tech was dumb. And the first technician that came had absolutely no idea what he was doing. He and I kid you not was there for 9 hours. I called my Mom at 9 am which he came like he said he would, but had no idea how to set it up. Maybe it was his first job, but that is simply unacceptable. If it was me I would have kicked him out after 2 hours.

I had Telus reinstated after canceling for the summer. It worked well when I ordered as the 3 month cancellation was long enough for me to get their promo rate for the next 6 months. The issue came when they went to activate everything. I own all of the gear and left it in place over the summer. The setup girl insisted that they needed a tech to come out to activate it. I asked her for the codes so that I could do it myself but she was certain that it couldn't be done that way.
3 weeks later when the tech showed up to install everything he told me they had scheduled him for a four hour visit and were going to activate my account once he got there. After waiting 5 minutes he gave me the codes and left, telling me to enter them when he calls to tell me that my account has been activated.

I love the system, but hate that they assume everyone is incompetent.

As a side note, their online support people are generally useless. Twice I asked them directly if they had the authority to discuss something. They proceeded to skirt the question for 20 minutes before telling me that I would need to call in. I don't think they have access to anything that isn't already online.

Is there a way to get the Calgary HD feed of CBC instead of the Vancouver feed on channel 602?

I will have to cancel Telus if I cannot get the Calgary HD feed.

FYI, I live in CALGARY so all I am asking for is the local HD feed.

I get the CBC Calgary HD feed on Channel 600. ( I Live in Calgary)

Doe anyone know how to keep the unit from powering off on its own. Occasionally I like to leave the music/radio on for an extended period and the unit shuts down is there a setting I'm missing.

I'm amazed at the amount of people that didn't know channel 600 was the local CBC HD feed.

I could swear that when I got my Optik installed, 600 was not the local CBC.

When did this free laptop deal start? I recently signed up with Telus and have had 2 huge disappointments: number 1 being that I missed out on the laptop, and number 2 that they did not tell me that my area (I live in a condo in Victoria Park) can only get 1 HD and 2 SD streams at the same time. The online "check availability" tool is very misleading if you type in your address as the basis of the search. It tells me "Based on the information that you have provided, you can watch Optik TV on up to 6 TVs in your home. "

Nothing about being limited to 1 HD stream.

To compare, I put in the address of the Sasso building that is across the street and a random suite, and I get the same thing "up to 6 TVs in your home."

The guy on the phone can't tell me when my area will get upgraded.

yikes.

I just came across this thread. We cancelled Shaw yesterday and signed up for Telus Optik.

We get more stuff for less money plus we get the laptop so I'm not too concerned. I was cheesed off that Shaw wasn't more interested in keeping our business though.

Any word on the quality of the lap top or problems with it.?

Called Telus the other day about the constant freezing, "recordings unavailable" and other problems that have pissed me off.

They told me it was a known software issue and said that the main box should work better and that the issue is a microsoft software thing that affects the communications between boxes. That is mostly true but even my main PVR box does freeze and have issues from time to time.

Said a major update to fix it is on the way but was really vague about the timing. Anywhere from a month to 3 months.

My Telus experiment ends on Saturday, Shaw is coming to install the Gateway system.

The user interface on Optik is beautiful, but god awful slow and I max out at 2 HD feeds in my house which sucks with 3 tv's and the need to record sometimes.

So a friend that works for Shaw hooked my up with basically the Gateway, Internet 50 and home phone with HD plus for 98.90/month.

So I'm happy, Telus internet was god awful slow in my area too. I got the original rate I wanted so I'm happy.

Just got my Telus Bill and the price of Optik TV has gone up again. This is twice in one year.

The price of the packs are now $5.75 each. They were $5. Prior to that, it was $4.50.

And again, with absolutely no warning.

Edit: Those prices are apparently if you signed up for a deal (which again, DOES NOT protect your rates). For anything new, its $7.00.

Just to clarify, are you meaning you signed a contract or you signed up for the discount bundle (like all 3 services for $45 or something)?

Just in case anyone has been following my ongoing battle with Telus getting something done.

Sent a tech out yesterday. Tested all the signal strengths and said it was good. Apparently I'm in one of the better neighborhoods in terms of signal strength.

Replaced the main PVR and another one of the boxes, said the problems aren't consistent with the area and other peoples experiences in my area. Fingers crossed that it was just faulty boxes.
