Who says Hanks didn't do it himself? Maybe his dark passenger has more control over him than Dexter's. Maybe he has split personalities. You'll notice the girl looks at Hanks pretty much the entire time. She only glances at Almos and to me it looked like a "WTF? Who's he talking to?"
Whether it is a red herring or real, there is no doubt the writers are intentionally trying to slip in hints that Almos isn't real.
It seemed obvious from the scene on the pier at the end of the first episode to me. The way Almos talked to Hanks just seemed so much like the Dexter-Harry relationship.
Almos never actively is seen doing anything (in the church, coffee shop, he was the passenger in the car), only Hanks ever converses with other characters, the relationship is similar to Dexter's dark passenger.
Again, maybe they're trying to make us think Almos is fake but I don't think so. I would bet anything that Almos went missing after he left UCLA (or whatever school they said he was a prof at) and I bet he's either related to Hanks or Hanks looked up to him. I'm convinced he's either the dark passenger or part of Hanks or both.
I also think Mos Def is going to help Dexter find this guy. Maybe he even knows Hanks/Almos.
