It's not exactly clear if it is similar - that's the problem. That's why you haven't seen large scale eviction of protesters in any city. Calgary certainly is not alone in this regard.

The security at G-8/20 is a different breed of animal all together. It's even higher than the Olympics.

OWS holds no credible threat to domestic security or local and foreign diplomats. There is absolutely no reason to squander that kind of money to intimidate a bunch of hippies and bleeding hearts out of Olympic Plaza.

The cold will evict them in couple of weeks.

I'm sure Nenshi will provide them heaters before it gets too chilly for them.

No need for any violence. You wait til the temperature drops below zero this week, then you turn on the sprinklers. The city does need to purge those pipes, don't let Occupy Calgary stop you.'

Nenshi's clearly hoping that the weather will do the dirty work, and he'll maintain his coolness with everyone, but he's really should jump in with both feet.
Hopefully he uses both feet to walk right into Olympic Plaza with a megaphone and tell those dirty loser hippies to get the F*** off his lawn, but it's more likely that he'll tweet them and give them a little pat on the back and tell them it's time to go back to daddy's house and warm up in front of the computer screen and facebook all the other "activists" about their success.

But really, is that all you (anti Nenshi) people have? A bunch of losers are camping downtown, and now the mayor is getting called arrogant and petulant? Y'all would've been better off with McIver? Because of a three week camp out by a bunch of people that'll likely throw human rights tantrums and start suing over constitutional rights if they're evicted?

Really, it's probably wiser for Nenshi, and everyone else, to just let these people stay for another week or two, before they tuck tail and beat it when the snow flies. Don't even acknowledge it. $40,000 my ass.
In six months, nobody will remember Nenshi's apparent spinelessness over this situation, but he'd be tied to it forever if the situation somehow gathered support over an eviction attempt.

If this were an actual hazard or inconvenience, then yeah, it'd have been time to get serious about two weeks ago. As it is, it's a bunch of wannabe intellectuals, rich kids, and stoners, whose achievements are going to be tallied in the form of twitter posts and doobies smoked.

Tawnee7, you do not speak for anyone I know. You are the epitome of "anti-intellectualism".

That would probably anger them. That would probably make them stronger. I dunno, like a flashbang to the head, 6 people running to save a guy, and a belligerent cop throwing another weapon on them.

I would be very careful about actions or comments like that. You don't want a locker room poster. As someone who disagrees with it, you don't want to make them angrier. Just ignore them, right?

Basically all I'm saying is that the city has stated that they're delaying fall maintenance on that area. So why not ignore them by proceeding them. Start moving the laws at 4:00 in the morning, purge the water pipes at 5:00. Bring in industrial blowers and sweepers at the crack of sun rise.

That way the city shows them that they're not going to prevent the work from being done.

and you can't possibly be comparing turning on the sprinklers to what happened in Oakland?

Let's stop a protest cause it's not convenient.

And yes I am comparing the two. That could have been us. That could have been you.

It will happen in another city. But ignore it how you want.

Enough is enough of this bs. I wandered through there today. I was bored, and on my bike, so I figured I would blend in with my disheveled look. There is a reason these losers don't have jobs. They are smelly, unshaven, lazy, losers. period.

Corporations do not hire losers, I do not hire losers, MacDonalds and Burger King hires losers, and the state of disrepair these people are in, even that would be difficult. I got in a very heated argument with a fellow down there that seemed to be so enlightened. Many people on this board know my story, and my lack of tolerance for lazy people and excuses. He was going off about how he blew through all his money, and is maxed out with student loans, and cannot find a job that pays him enough to pay off his debt. I told him it must have been awesome to get the chance to go to University, and travel, etc. I never had that chance and as a High School drop out I still managed to make a very comfortable living by simply busting my ass and begging for opportunities. I told him, I started washing cars when I was 17 for $6 bucks an hour, and now, I make that in about 5 minutes. Not because I am some elitist corporate Nazi, but because I bust my ass, week in week out to the tune of 50-60 hours a week. Not because I want to, but because that is what I have to do, and what is expected by my boss, if I wish to stay employed, period. His response.... "if you have it so good, then maybe you should work 30 hours a week, and someone else can work the other 30 and have half of what you make. You are just hoarding it for yourself" Totally f'n missed the point.

This whole thing is about envy. A bunch of people that were dealt a bad hand, that cannot find it in themselves to do what it takes to survive. You can choose to be a loser, and sit in a park, in your own filth, begging for rubbers and asswipe....or you can choose to be a winner...or at least try, and make your life better, on your own terms. If a damaged pile of goods like me, can make a life for myself, there is NO reason, these self righteous losers, cannot do the same.

There is a huge contingent of people involved with this that are legitimatley unable to fend, or cope. Big corporations should not be the targets of these people. They are mentally ill, and dellusional, and should be looking at our mental health system. Those people, I truly feel for. But they have been horribly misguided and influenced, by these hippy wannabees that think they are going actually to change anything. THEY WILL NOT. I say turn on the sprinklers, and get out the riot gear. Enough is enough.

I think Nenshi is a spineless twerp, and I have since day one. He is too terrified to make a decision that may offend someone. Take a page out of your predecessors book, or good old Ralph, and get these stinky bums off the street, that I, and all the other tax paying citizens, pay to maintain. You might get some respect from those of us that saw through your 'Wannamaker' style campaign.

Losers, get a job.

Lets stop a protest because the "protestors" are idiots that represent nobody, while their lone accomplishment is to scuttle the rights of others.

No lets stop the protest because its not a protest, its never been a protest. Its a camping site with some jingo's being stated.

And your comparison honestly is dumb, we are not Oakland, thats pretty clear, if we were Oakland we would have bulldozed that dump weeks ago.

I felt sorry for the Muslim Festival that was wrecked by these idiots, and saw a major attendance drop due to these fools.

I went down to check that out on Saturday and they should have been upset with the occupyers, they paid for the use of the entire area and these arrogant twits didn't give them that common courtesy and it smelled like a typical camp ground.

They arrogantly believe that they represent some mythical 99%, but they don't.

they clearly didn't represent the people who wanted a festival this weekend the majority of whom are not in the 1%.

And making it inconvienient for them to stay there is not some violent action, its not some police brutality movement, frankly they are there at the sufferance of the city and the tax payers, and if the city and the taxpayers make it hard for them to stay there, then so be it, they bleat about their rights to peacefull assembly and thats great but the city and its taxpayers have a right to their own use without the interference of these people.

They have a perfectly good camp space set aside for them at Princess Island Park, they should go and use that.

Awesome.

In the battle for hearts and minds, Occupy Wall St. is starting to lose.

One thing you're going to see come up more often in copycat style is municipalities making public their costs to service the Occupy Wall St. movement.

Calgary was one of the first with the $40,000 claim to repair damage/vandalism at Olympic Plaza. Phoenix is now saying they've spent $204,000 of taxpayer dollars on this, particularly on overtime. A frustrated city councillor in Phoenix wants to pass that bill onto the protestors.

http://www.azcentral.com/community/p...-thousand.html

Those are the kinds of cost-based pronouncements that infuriate taxpayers, the very people the Occupy movement needs to embrace.

Then you're starting to see articles like this in Toronto and today in LA, small business owners saying the Occupy movement is hurting business:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,3865505.story

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toront...merchants.html

A sympathetic columnist in the LA Times is getting tired of the "endless slumber party" and wants the group to get off its ass and do something, anything. His suggestions: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...4348313.column

Its a common theme across most municipalities - some sympathy to the thought but are you really going to just camp out, get in the way, and do little else?

Municipalities, with some exceptions, are essentially sitting back to see which way the wind is blowing, suspecting this movement will eventually fade away through lack of inertia and an eventual public backlash . . . . . which appears to be happening now.

The settlements will never go to zero, however, which is where municipalities hopes will be dashed. There will always be a hard core group and they'll have to be forciably evicted, which, for PR reasons, is Occupy Wall St.'s hope. Arrests are good visuals for Occupy Wall St. Scenes of violence are even better.

The tipping point for municipalities, where public anger/sympathy shifts sufficiently to the side of authorities so political blowback is minimal at the moment of forcable eviction, will be different in each city.

In the meantime, while we wait and the bills to taxpayers pile up, one of the best things cities have going for them is Occupy Wall St. doing all the talking. The more various messengers for this group talk and spread their message, the worse they look.
