I'm not sure that I can even consider the CBC to be a credible news source. First with their personal and unprofessional conduct concerning Rob Ford, and second with them being caught blatantly lying about Quebecor on their website.
We know that CBC has an agenda, but what they've been doing over the last few month is national enquirer like.
If the Conservatives were smart after the common committee hearings they would go in and clean out the CBC executive offices with a blow torch, and cut their funding in half, and force them to make up the rest through ad sales.
CBC is tainted. They're also incredibly arrogant in not believing that Canadian's have a right to know how they're spending out money.
And Darandan, you've said a few times that their programming sucks, in a proper free market environment they'd actually be forced to be competitive with the other networks and therefore be forced to improve their quality of work, but because they're getting wholly subsidized all we're doing is proper up a terrible product.
I'm not saying its time for CBC to die, I am saying you either skin it back to a pure newservice, or you move it from basic cable to pay cable and let the people that actually want it to fund it.

I put two examples in my post, so how is that sooooooo Alberta, give me a break.
The Rob Ford episode which is getting worse all the time, and outright fabricating facts in their war against Quebecor strip and credibility that the sooooo alberta argument would ever have.

Spelled it wrong, but ok. It's not like names matter.
As I tried to say in my posts. It's a package deal. You don't get one without the other.
HNIC is the longest running show ON EARTH. Between radio and television it smokes Coronation Street, The Simpsons, All in the Family, etc.
Our news, even though you have your bias, is more fair and balanced, (to use a term) than the alternative.
It's a lot like the railroad. It brings us together. Maybe you don't use it, but it makes your country better.

HNIC can still continue. Just let TSN take over the rights. They'd do a better job anyway.
And their news is more and more biased as they look for ways to undermine the Conservative government. To anyone who isn't left leaning in their politics it's obvious.
Give them a $100 million budget and let them compete. They may even put out a better product because they have to try.

That is the most obvious decision. But I guarantee you, it won't work like that. It's not that simple.
It's a good decision, it's a logical decision. But it's impossible.
If you want corporation run news, ask the US how that is going.

What's the issue in CBC not being able to produce news with that type of budget?
Why does CBC NEED over a billion in budget to function while other stations like Global and CTV and City TV do well on their own? What makes CBC so special over them and can't afford a major drop in budget while remaining consistent in news programming?

I don't know. It's a respectable question to ask. Its a thought exercise. But I do know how it ends.
We have one of the most reputable news organizations in the world. We have the longest running program on Earth.
I would be very careful with tampering with that.
EDIT: Can we make it better? Probably. Are we better by scraping it? Resounding No.

That still isn't good value for 1.6 billion.
But we can't be sure of the value that we're getting because CBC won't properly disclose how they're spending our money.
And again, the whole news thing can be handled for a lot less by keeping newsworld and flushing the rest, they can even pay back Canadian's by selling the rights to Hockey Night in Canada to TSN.
And on the counter to CBC protecting Canadian Culture, remember it was CBC and their terrible lazy we don't care coverage that almost killed the CFL. When TSN took over CFL football they actually promoted it like it should be promoted, and produced it professionally.
Imagine what they could do with HNIC

This. Not that HNIC needs promotion...

I would agree. However I am a big enough person to say I don't know how we get there from here.
Changing is one thing, scraping is another.

Canada =/= USA
We have less population and less lowest common denominator. It wouldn't work out like that.
