I'm not too keen on them either, but at least they are within our by-laws.

The occupy people could learn a lot from their example.

Well perhaps it is time for a group of community minded citizens to exercise THEIR rights by visiting the Occupy Calgary protests at Olympic Plaza to SPEAK OUT against those occupying the Plaza.

If the police can't persuade them to leave, maybe the protesters will listen to the people THEY CLAIM TO REPRESENT.

A group of us bloggers were joking about setting up our own tents.... but inside city hall (we like comfort)....LOL

But I like where you are going with this. Put the power of CP into action.

Sadly we used up all of the power of CP helping a girl we didn't know win a stupid contest about paper cups.

Someone needs to start a "Reclaim Olympic Plaza for the people of Calgary" Facebook page. Maybe the mayor will wake up and figure out the people of Calgary don't support the occupation of the plaza.

These 'protests' are in reality lazy and uncommitted to change, change comes through work, not screwing around and having fun at what is essentially a crusties party.
They're dissimilar from the 60's because those protests had numbers whereas these are still peripheral curiousities relative to the total population base.

http://chnm.gmu.edu/hardhats/kent.html

In the early 80's, there were single weekend protests numbering 250,000 and more in Europe calling for unilateral disarmament by America as a goodwill gesture to the Soviet Union. A terminally stupid idea but big numbers.

Occupy Wall St. needs a different strategy. The Business Section of the Globe & Mail offers some serious tips: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/repor...rticle2216900/

And Branding Occupy Wall St.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/repor...rticle2216298/

If you were to ask me - and you aren't - I would call for people to travel across country to big, single day protest events . . . . say simultaneous marches on Wall St. and on the Mall in Washington, thereby creating the spectacle of numbers instead of the current nickel and dime approach.

The movement is starting to get murdered on the PR front with the demonstratable "dirty hippy" accusation by local governments tired of them destroying public parks . . . . and dropping the $40,000 cost accusation was brilliant by the City of Calgary.

I'm all for people protesting their opinion but it drives me crazy when they don't take others in consideration or do considerable property damage in order to get their voice said (40K to Olympic Plaza, WTF?) They should respect the fact that the Muslim Festival is this weekend so they should pack up and move somewhere else where the protests won't infringe on others.

I love how they're generously offering to share the space.

Since the Muslim festival booked the space, did the paperwork for the space, and probably paid for any licenses to use the space, its not up to the Occupy Movement about sharing the space. Its about the Muslim Heritage Festival deciding to share the space that they reserved.

Perhaps it's time for a good old-fashioned jihad. I would be bemused to wake up tomorrow and read "Occupy Calgary protesters massacred during the night by unknown sword-wielding assailants"...

Sounds like Occupy Calgary could take some lessons from the Muslim festival about how a free society operates by respecting the rights of others.

At this point I really think the plaza needs to be made uncomfortable place to squat. I'm not talking tear gas & rubber bullets. But maybe a loud siren & an announcement of the current time every 30 minutes after 11:00pm? Followed by leaf blowers & lawn mowers during the day?

Lock the toilets during certain hours? Just generally make it less & less comfortable without resorting to force.

I know a guy who has a surefire way to clear out a bar of stragglers at closing time:

He puts a bunch of cash in the jukebox and selects "Wham - Wake me up before you go-go" on continuous play. The bar is usually clear by the third playback of the song!

every four minutes have someone walk into the middle of the camp with a megaphone and ask

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I was wondering if you heard?"

and then play this over and over again

Bring back the town cryer position.

Hire Andy Dick to act as the spokesman for the city of Calgary.

Loudspeaker idea has merit. Crank up some Johnny Cash and then just let it loop at the 5:15 point of this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVyYsc2UfPU

Any other year and they would have been killed off by now like those annoying fall aphids that are taken care of by the elements. A mild fall with very little precipiation makes this the perfect storm for these vultures. Bring on the cold and smoke them out of there
