Default Canada Wins Baseball Gold at Pan-Am Games

I thought this deserved some attention, as Canada just beat the USA 2-1 in the gold medal game at the Pan Am Games in Mexico. This is an extremely impressive feat as we beat some baseball powerhouses such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Mexico and USA.

This is the first time Canada has won a major international tournament and hopefully we can medal in the 2013 world baseball classic. Scott Richmond got the save and the team was made up of Canada's top minor league players.

Congrats to Canada !!!

Just out of curiosity was the US team just made up of college players?

Nope Triple-A and Double-A players..here is a link to the USA roster. Just a side note..it appears Larry Walker was on the active roster (he was their hitting coach)

Simply an outstanding accomplishment. Easily Canada's top moment in its baseball history.

Says something about the direction baseball is going in this country.

Interesting article - oddly translated in places, but shows just how much this tournament means.

This is the first time ever since 1959, when Cuba left without medals that a team of our country does not get to finals. It is also the worst performance in the last fifty years because the only year we missed the gold in 1967, we got the silver. It is a scandal for our national sport, an overwhelming deed, a sad event even the most skeptical or pessimistic was not able to foresee.

Reminds me of the World Cup of Hockey back in '96.

I went to high school with Jim Henderson and he was more of a basketball player. I knew he was doing well in baseball, but I had no idea how well. Congrats to all of the players. As stated above, it's absolutely a true testament to the direction of the sport in Canada.

Except that tournament actually meant something with other countries putting top guys into it.

Great for Canafa to win but not sure how it means much for Canada to win against second rate teams.
