Kelowna has numerous hydroponic stores. It would be easy for the RCMP to follow customers to the grow-op?

Me and my buddy were going to start a small grow op when we were younger. We went to that place on Edmonton Trail just south of 16th ave NE, I believe. We bought a bunch of stuff and as we came out of the store I thought "You know, If I were the police, I'd have a hidden camera mounted somewhere in the area, just to capture people, cars and licence plates that frequent that place". Then I thought, "I betcha they do".
Luckily, for us it was more just a flavour of the month idea, being young and stupid. Once we realized how much work and effort would be needed for the grow op, we took the true stoner route; Gave up and just bought weed.

The last thing I want is to meet the neighbours after the cops bust in; only to find out it's just somebody who is house poor or something.

Simply call the non-emerg line 403-266-1234.

There's nothing wrong with phoning the cops. They're not going to bust in with the TAC. team based on one phone call. They'll investigate if they're not already. Chances are, they'd start by knocking on the door. If it turns out it's not a grow-op and somebody answers the door then they'll just make an excuse as to why they're there. If you suspect it, phone it in. I'd feel kinda lame if my hunch ended up being right and I didn't do anything about it.

good point about busting out the foundation to get to the power - but then there is the smell and general odor that comes from the house, i also beleive there a humming sound eminates from the house. additionally there is the classic tell tale sign of no snow on the roof in the winter, when all the other houses have snow.
personally i would think that the po-po would not just walk up and knock on the door of a suspected grow-op. i would think that they would do a little surveillance first, try and catch the guys int eh act, follow them etc. also i thought that HAWCS had some thermal imaging camera, so if that is correct one would think that they'd likely arrange for a flyover and see what the house looks like relative the the rest of the 'hood

All those things about smell and heat are old news now.
A friend and neighbor of mine is a CPS member directly related to those investigations and he was telling me all the tricks that are now used to combat what you just mentioned - I was shocked what they do now. (won't repeat what I know however)

Excess heat and smell is vented out through the sewage line. I have heard it is nearly impossible to tell from thermal imaging.

Yes, here in East Van all the local plant shops sell 'skunkbuster' odour scrubbing systems, because we know know how tomatos reek

I did, in particular the part of the police simply knocking on the door. The police would have the home and suspects under surveillance for countless hours to make sure they have every detail tracked in order to arrest someone for the grow operation. I am sure we don't need to go into our legal system and how slanted it is towards the suspects. If the police simply knocked on the door, the whole case is likely in the garbage. I just thought it would be funny to see the reaction of the criminals - they know the rules (in many cases) better than the police do.
If the cops could use thermal imaging (and other assorted wavelengths), it is easy (despite what other users have said) to detect grow ops. Any GIS class could develop their own system to do this effectively, unfortunately our wimpy system currently does not allow this.

All of that is a give-in. I'm talking about a home that isn't a suspected grow-op by the police. If you call in suspicious activity for a house that isn't in their list of potential grow-ops then at the most they would send a unit over to appease the neighborhood. And by "at most" I mean from a physical stand point. I'm sure an investigation would be pending. If it's a house they already are watching, then of course they won't walk up to the door. I suppose I wasn't clear enough in my original post. The message I was getting across is; it's ok to phone in a suspicious house. They won't burst in through the front door and ruin dinner. They'll investigate as appropriate.
I'm not entirely sure why you couldn't have put that post in place of the "lol" though. Time constraint?

I laughed out loud, and when I read it again it was still funny. More keystone cops than anything, nothing about you. I don't think in any circumstance they will simply knock on the door, since I think most of the operations are gang related.
I agree, the key is to phone them in. I could care less about the drug and more about the fire hazard for everyone around. Those places seem to burn down all the time.

Not to beat a dead horse but new late article tonight:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/homes/P...987/story.html
As part of Project Calgary, the Herald examined public data on all the 2010 homes condemned because of health risks developed through the presence of an illegal marijuana grow operation. Such drug houses found they were particularly concentrated in suburban neighbourhoods near the northwest and northeast edges of the city. Most affected last year were New Brighton, Marlborough Park, Hidden Valley and Temple, where the Hendricks have lived for more than 15 years.

Coming home on the bus tonight, I noticed there's a house on New Brighton Dr that has fencing surrounding it and a giant Keep Out sign.

Yup, we sure live in a great neighborhood. If I knew back then, what I know now, I would have never moved here.
My kids are entering school now and New Brighton isn't going to get a school so I have to ship my daughter to Cranston at the moment. When the copperfield school is done she'll go there. Too bad because she has already established some relationships in Cranston and now she'll have to do that all over again.

Over reaction much? Not every community has a school. Your daughter could go to catholic school and stay in the neighborhood (well across street in mckenzie towne)

Dude, we are in catholic school. The Mckenzie Towne school is full so we were shipped to Cranston. Now we're gonna get bumped to Copperfield.
Just a complaint, not that I'm over reacting but if I could do it all over again I would have moved to Cranston. I have other reasons as well
