Default Vehicular Geekery Thread

I thought I'd make a new thread for us enthusiasts to share links, info, pictures with each other. Yes, I also created the General Automotive Thread, but my goal with that was more question/information seeking/sharing based. I'd love this to be a place where people share links to good articles on new car tech/sweet classics/4x4 videos/custom bike builds/etc., share photos of their own projects or finished projects, and generally just geek out about vehicles. Can't wait to see some of the projects people have on CP, as I know we have a great community and I'm sure lots of project gems will surface!

To start, I'd like to share a few of my favourite sites which I visit on a regular basis:

Bring A Trailer - Great blog type website which links to vehicles for sale. They link to everything from Russian military vehicles to rare classic sports cars and everything in between. Also, they have many knowledgeable commenters who are never afraid to share their thoughts on the vehicles posted.

Jalopnik - Great all around blog with news, photos, information, you name it. Definitely one of the more popular blogs out there.

The Truth About Cars - News, reviews, editorials, and opinions. Another great site with often great comments from the readers.

Thanks for reading and please contribute away!

Good idea and I would like to see a auto section on CP. Theres another forum that specializes in that as we do with the flames (Calgary forum). With that being said, I see no reason why we couldnt avoid the trip to beyond for our own discussion.

We are truly in a golden age of cars right now. The HP/$ ratio is crazy. I remember in the late 80's early 90's, the fact the the Lotus Esprit turbo SE had 200hp, out of a 2.0 engine, was a major benchmark, 100 HP/litre. Now showroom naturally aspirated cars are achieving that ratio.

What a lot of young guys are missing out on, is the cobbled together pieces of crap we got to drive. When a socket/wrench set was pretty much all you needed to do your own general repairs. I miss rebuilding carburetors. I miss changing my muffler in the Canadian Tire parking lot with muffler tape, and bailing wire...lol. It was fun, but you can't get away with that garbage now. I will never forget the doorbell button ignition I installed on my 82 Mustang when the factory tumbler just fell out.

The biggest achievement in my auto repair career, was completely rebuilding a Mazda 12A rotary on my 82 RX-7, with nothing more than a Chiltons manual, and 600 bucks worth of parts from the Mazda dealer when I was 17. A guy down the street bought that car from me, and it ran for 11 years on that rebuild. I always wondered why the Wankel engine never caught on. It made so much more sense than piston engines, and if the same amount of time an research went into it, it would have been amazing what could have been achieved with the rotary concept.

I think emissions and driveability. You need to rev the crap out of those for any power, usually not much at all going on down low. If you look at an RX-8 compared to anything that gets the same fuel economy, it's slllllooowwwww.

Adam Carolla's Car Show on Speed is entertaining. Some humour along with some very cool automobiles.

doesn't canadian tire have signs up in their parking lots saying that you're not supposed to do vehicle repairs on site?? i think i remember seeing those at one time.... not that i actually complied.... many quick fixes were achieved in the canadian tire parking lot.... ahhh.... good times!!!!

onto the thread topic.... a magazine i love is 8lug hd. i always buy it - great pics, lots of "how to's", they feature reader's trucks and it's a great place to get ideas.

the webpage is here:

http://www.8-lug.com

....now if only my truck had 8 lugs instead of 6!!!! ha! ha!

Would this be a good thread to get input on cars? I'm in the market and having trouble deciding what to get. Who better to ask than vehicle geeks?

Or would a separate thread be better?

It's as good as thread as any. Seems like we have about 4-5 car threads going on....would be good to merge them all into one stickied thread.

Might want to check out the other thread I created awhile back, General Automotive Thread. It's basis was more for information seeking, advice, etc. and is more geared towards cars/trucks. That being said, you're free to request input wherever you like!

So I guess what I'm looking for is something that's nice

We'll have a SUV/CUV/Wagon for the family trips, so this is more a car for me, most of its usage will be driving my kid to school and going out with the wife and stuff like that. But it still has to have back seats of some kind that are usable for my kid at least.

While I'm appreciative of the fast cars as anyone, if I'm honest with myself I really am not a high end driver, but something with a bit of oompf is nice. But I know comfort is still important, I don't think I'd like a hard riding sports car with 20" wheels to drive day in and day out, as much as I'd like to pretend.

So to give you an idea of what I've looked at online recently that appeals to me (for varying reasons):

Audi A5, Audi A4, Genesis (both Sedan and Coupe), BMW 3/5 series, Mercedes C/E, Jaguar XF, Infiniti G37 (Sedan and Coupe), Caddy CTS, Lexus IS..

I know that's a pretty broad range and I've driven only a few of these so I've probably got a lot of looking and trying to do, but if anyone has any experience with what they like along these lines..

I used to be active on M5Board.com - now that I've sold the M5, I'll be significantly less so. A wealth of information available there, and lots of neat tips and tricks.

Now I lurk on Bimmerfest.com. I picked up an E90 335i twin-turbo, so I'm usually searching for ideas for mods and things.

The day I can afford a G37 coupe I'm getting one. I just think that's an awesome looking car. Very happy with my 2 door Kia Forte, though. Just shined it up today.

Spoiler!
