Celebrated Square Root Day
|
This is very exciting, and something we've all been painstakingly waiting for. I've been anticipating this decision since twenty minutes ago when I read about it in this thread. The wait is over, Halifax wins!

Quebec is going to throw a fit as usual.
Does anyone have a breakdown of what exactly the $35billion is buying?

Hopefully they build a military icebreaker or two to beef up our claim in the northern passage!

A very good day for Halifax basically a 20 year contract which will provide a lot of jobs to region that really needs it, and supports an industry that had gone very quiet.
The same with the Vancouver bid though there are some problems with the design of the JSS's and the bid process for deigns.
From my understanding the major combat vessel program will include coastal defence and additional new generation frigates (But I could be wrong) my only dissapointment is that there isn't a designated replacement for Canada's aging Irquiois Destroyers which are the command and control element that would allow us to form proper task forces. Without them, we will continue to take a escort role in any international missions.
The 8 arctic patrol vessels are essential as are new coastal defense vessels.
But there is still a hole in our naval strategy overall.
the icebreakers are nice to see.

It was probably on the table, except that with the success of the really excellent Halifax Class Frigates it just makes sense to have a made in Canada design that can operate in blue water and coastal areas and can effectively perform multiple roles as Canadian Independant or as part of a larger task force.
The other argument that I heard was that we should buy soon to be mothballed ships from the British or Americans, but that doesn't serve our requirements as the American's have adopted a design philosophy based around specialization.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the new Canadian Single Class Surface combatant (which is part of this contract) replaces both the Iroquois and the Halifax?

Guess I stand corrected the wiki article is claiming that the CSCS will replace the Iroquois, I'm not sure about that, but I've been wrong before.

Thats the idea, but I consider the CSCS to be a frigate class more then a destroyer class.
the Iroquois did have some nice advantages including the ability to man 2 antisub helicopters at the same time.
However the new ship does have more offensive punch and is more well rounded then either the Halifax or the Iroquiis.
My understanding was that the CSCS wasn't meant to be a command vessel in a task force, but I could be wrong.

Everyone is happy for Halifax, but I know quite a few people in North Van that are suddenly very very happy and now with 100% more job security.
Not a Conservative, but me likey.

I concur, alas I'm not that good with Photoshop. If only someone on this board was good with photoshop, wouldn't it be cool if it was someone from HALIFAX even though right now they'd probably be DRUNK?

And the whining from Quebec begins.
Quote:
The Bloc Québécois accused the Harper government, with the support from the New Democratic Party, of “completely abandoning Quebec shipyard workers” and robbing the Quebec yards of 1,500 long-term jobs.

Why didn't Calgary put in a bid?
It would have been cool to have some ships being built here.
