You have a majority, yes. Solid...? I don't know, Layton's track record shows otherwise. Will Layton be happy with a balance of power type situation or will he be encouraged by the NDP's relative success in the election and roll the dice again?
If the Conservatives get inventive and progressive with Quebec we could see some even bigger numbers from there next time around.

Why do you people think Martin resigning as leader is good for the Conservatives? Frank McKenna is going to come in and win a majority for the Liberals as soon as this CPC minority falls.

It's good for Canada. A good leader is always better than a bad one. You replace Martin with McKenna or Manley, and replace Harper with Bernard Lord, and the country can't lose no matter who is PM.

If you say so.
I think there is some serious allegations coming his way and he now has no way to control the damage.
We haven't heard the last of Paul Martin making headlines.

Hahaha. I used to live in NB under Lord. Most of my family still lives there now. He's an absolutely terrible, spineless leader. Not surprisingly, a poll last month that pitted Lord vs. McKenna in a hypothetical federal election had New Brunswickers choosing McKenna by nearly a 66-33 margin.

I am by no means a liberal supporter but that was probably the best possible thing that could have happened for them - none of the leaders were well liked in this election and if they can bring in someone who had nothing to do with sponsorship and has some charisma I think they are much stronger than they were yesterday.

Precisely. I've said from the start of this campaign that a small Conservative minority and Martin stepping down is the very best thing that can happen for the Liberals.
Does anyone have the numbers comparing popular support between this election and 2004? I may be wrong, but it looks like the CPC has barely moved at all. Most of the Liberal losses went to the NDP (at least in terms of support, not seats), it seems.

I think the liberals and conservatives flipped popular vote roughly @ about 36-30, the conservatives gained 6 percent, largely with an impressive showing in Quebec.

30% and 99 seats.
I think a minority is good for the Conservatives. Gives the rest of Canada an opportunity to see that Harper isn't that bad.

Does anyone think Olivia Chow wearing Blue is a sign of things to come?

Which party will Harper look to in order to prop up his government? The socialist NDP? The separatist Bloc? The Liberals that he's spent his entire political career vilifying?
Mark my words, we're going to see another Liberal majority as soon as this goverenment falls. The only chance the Tories have to somehow win a majority is to trigger their own defeat before the Liberals have an opportunity to choose a new leader and get organized.

Or it gives everyone a chance to see how bad he actually is. Right now we have no idea. Will you hold him accountable if he doesn't do a good job?? I dunno, I just can't picture this guy really being a good statesman, but we'll see how he does. I'm no Harper fan, but I guess I have to give him a chance to prove himself.

I stand corrected.
Still, how can the CPC supporters here not be disappointed given how awful the Liberals ran their campaign and the amount of momentum the Conservatives had heading into the election. An untenable minority government and a gain of only 6% in popular support cannot be the result Harper was hoping for.

All depends on what policy he wants to put forward at any point in time. He's said that he'll work with all parties - something that should be common practice.
Will a Liberal majority be in the future? Almost without a doubt, as would be a future Conservative majority. How much in the future? Who knows.
A house cleaning for the Liberals is needed, and hopefully this is the start to it.
