So here is a question...

We all know Ms. Stronach tried for the leadership of the Conservatives, and lost to Harper. Then, she went on to MP for Newmarket-Aurora (ONT). Crossed the floor to the liberals, and dumped her fiance Peter MacKay, of the conservatives.

So i guess its more of an observation... But I sure hope Peter gets the last laugh tonight when she's turfed on her ass.

My, how the tables have turned.

True enough, though it could be argued that McKay did what he felt was best for his party. Stronach did what she felt was best for herself.

If McKay doesnt merge his party with the Alliance, then we are not talking election today becuase the Liberals would have won a healthy majority in 2004, despite their corruption.

I really don't think it was right what he did on any grounds - no worse or better than Stronach. I don't think it is better to have only one choice on the "right" when there are 4 @ varying degrees of "left". If there was a moderate right wing party like the PCs around (without the Anders types that inspire the are you scared of the conservatives conversations recently) they would have a landslide majority in this election, instead they will have a small one or a minority in all likelihood.

A newb politician getting a seat in the Cabinet? Granted most politicians don't aspire to be backbenchers, but most won't sell themselves to the highest bidder, either.

You think the PCs would have broken the CA stronghold in Alberta, and to a lesser extent the west?

You think the Liberals wouldn't have won a ton of seats simply because of vote splitting?

Take one look at the 2000 election. Liberals: 41% of the vote, 172 seats.
CA + PC: 38% of the vote: 78 seats.

That is what keeping the Alliance and Tories apart would have caused in 2004. Canada is better off for a united right wing.

I think they would have broken through in Toronto and the maritimes if they were perceived to be more centrist, also the CA would be an ally for them in parliament and I think their overall position would be stronger. If everyone thinks that way and the leftist parties unite eventually , the conservatives will be annihilated- I think more choice is better and represents people's actual views more accurately.

Yes. As Blue as I am, that one seat won't make or break the Conservatives, and Anders should be turfed.

Alright, it was a generalization. It's just the 25,000 or so that voted for her.

Ideologically, the Liberals are closer to the Conservatives than they are the NDP on many issues.

Greens are considered leftist, but are very right economically. The Bloq doesnt fit in any pidgeonhole, and they arent about to be "united" with anyone.

It was only the CA and the PCs who were very similar in ideology. It is the perception that is the issue, not the politics.
