When I called Rogers to inquire about the 4S, I was told that the 4 is on for $99 plus $50 rebate and $0 activation fee for a total of $50.

The guy yesterday told me $159 with a 3 year contract so I'm assuming it's already in.

There are many many pros and cons.
I could write a long post about being pro-buying outright, but then I think a guy like pylon would come in and say why he is pro-contract.
I never like being chained to a company, for any reason. It's why, despite their drawbacks, I am a Shaw cable user. I've had one cell phone contract in my life, and when it ended I was so damn happy, but there are people who don't mind it one bit. You can usually upgrade two years in, start the contract over, and upgrade your phone.. but I just hate the contract. It limits what I can do in negotiating, and man I've gotten some great deals from Shaw and Telus over the years from being contract free.
My Dad and I just got my Mom an iPhone 4 from Best Buy last Sunday, so hearing the drop to 90 is annoying but not a big deal at all. My Dad didn't mind the 3 years, they both had their last phones for 3 plus years, and with their iPad I think she really wanted an iPhone.

Thanks, the buddy who got that must have had some sort of warranty or something along those lines.

Doesn't Best Buy have 30 day price protection?

Because of the typically high resale value that iPhones have, making the one time investment to buy one outright essentially puts you in a position where you can upgrade to the new hardware at/near launch for $100-200. Even with the 4S coming out this week, you will still find a market for people to pay upwards of $500 for a used 4 that is in good shape.
... Just my thoughts.

$169. I was just there trying to get my phone sleep button fixed. I have to pay for a full refund.

apple.com still has the iPhone 4 8GB for $550. Even buying a 3GS outright is $375.

I used to work at BB 5 years ago. They have 30 day price protection for some products and 14 day for others but I can't remember which products are only 14 day.
I was very angry with Telus 2 years ago and was locked into a contract with them. I wanted the Blackberry Bold 9700 and they wouldn't offer me anything. I ended up buying the phone at the $700 price point and got the best buy warrenty that is $10/month.
Within the first year I was having some problems with the BB and went into the store. I had to show them what was wrong with the phone and that my standby button was not working. I was able to trade the BB over for a brand new Iphone 4 at the time. It made year 1 and the $120 i spent on the warrenty well worth it as i did not have to extend my contract with telus. I am hoping that something will go wrong with my Iphone in the next year that will allow me to upgrade to the 4S or 5 (if it is out by then).
Even if I don't use that warrenty again (3 year plan $360 total) I still have already come out on top as I recieved a $750 phone at no additonal cost.

Although I know people do it, I have no idea why anyone would pay that much for a used phone. The life of the phones is barely over two years. You're essentially paying 75% of the price for a used phone, with last years technology, that is only going to last you 50% of the life of the phone.
Back to contracts, in my opinion, if you are going to have a phone for 3 years, you might as well get a free phone. The companies probably won't help you out if your phone breaks in the first 2 years (unless you are a big spender). So if your phone breaks, you are going to have to buy one...but guess what, without a contract you have to buy one outright anyways.
Right now the techonology is so good, that even the lower end smart phones can be descent.
My advice, sign the contract, get the cheap phone. If it breaks/gets lost/stolen, buy a replacement android phone for $100-200 to limp through your contract until the 2 year mark, at which point you will be able to upgrade and sign a new contract.
Also, with the IPhones, you are saving as much as $400-500 off the cost of a phone, and sometimes more. What is the cost of that vs. the cost of the buyout on the contract and the odds you will actually want to buyout?

Bought the iPhone 4s today and I can't believe how fast this thing is. Unbelievable. Can't believe I used a crappy blackberry for so long because of bbm. Tsn videos and CP load instantly. This phone is faster than my computer.
