I can't believe nobody's called you out for insulting a guy's girlfriend in a thread like this.
Harsh man. Harsh.

I really have to give credit to the diamond companies as they have very successfully pulled off the greatest marketing scam in the history of ever.

Maybe and no insult intended, but if you can't afford to spend $500.00 maybe the whole getting married thing should be put off for a while.

I got engaged in August, and bought my ring from BlueNile.
Got the ring appraised and its worth about $4,000 more than I actually paid for it. I've heard nothing but great things about them and I certainly can't say a bad thing about the experience.

OP, does your girlfriend have her heart set on a traditional center stone type ring? If not, perhaps look into an eternity style type ring. For 500, that might give you more "flash" for your money.
Any chance you have an opportunity to use a ring or stone with sentimental value, that could maybe be reset? A grandmother's or something similar?
FWIW, My husband has given me beautiful pieces from AB diamond exchange and bluenile.
Good luck!

You're assuming all women are the same. They're not.
That being said, OP, maybe go for at least a grand? Poor people like me might decide to get married too, and a half a paycheque at the poverty line isn't quite enough, imo, regardless of what she says.

Furthermore, a 0.5 c is a decent size, but make sure you get a good cut. As mentioned before, a good cut will make the stone look larger, I went with a two "trillion" cut 0.25c diamonds and they look quite large. Stay away from Spence and Peoples and the garbage they throw down your throat... might be worth your while to do some local research and find a custom guy in town. He should be able to get you decent diamonds, just negotiate with him. DO NOT rush into buying the ring, for the sake of having one to give.
Make sure you do your homework, and for the love of Jebus when you give her the ring make it as memorable as possible. They want the story!! a 0.5c diamond becomes a 0.8c diamond if the "pop the question" story is top notch.
Furthermore, diamonds are a rip off. It is an over inflated market started by deBeers. Google it if you don't believe us. IMO Gemstones are the way to go, explain to her that she could be unique and have much larger sapphire/ruby/emerald (if size matters) or a plain ole diamond like everybody else.
You know her, I don't, tailor it to her and nobody else the rest of the people can eat their hats

I paid $1000 for my ring, and it is quite nice, and the lady is more than happy with it. Shop around and look for the ring that is right for you. The whole setting aside this much salary for this amount of time always seemed like a ridiculous scheme concocted and perpetuated by diamond salesmen to me. I know some people that have purchased rings for around $500-$600, and their ladies are very happy with them, too, though I think mine is better. Basically, if your lady wants to marry you, she'll love whatever ring you give her, and this is how it should be.
Oh, and buy a Canadian diamond! Your girlfriend probably doesn't want to wear a diamond mined at the expense of African slave labourers, and if she does, she probably won't be happy with a ring that only costs $500-$600, anyway.

Even after getting divorced, I still want to pull it out and wear it because I loved the design of it and it was a very nice ring.
I personally think large diamond rings are hideous. I also tend to think the women with rings like that are those that just use their men for money or accessories. It's painting a group with a broad brush, but I've seen it proven many times. There is no need to put a down payment for a house or car on your hand that usually ends up looking like costume jewellery. If the guy truly feels like he wants to give a gift that's worth that much, then that's fine. But I think (and see in this thread) too many guys are pressured into spending a lot of money that they worked for and earned and should have the right to spend as they want because they are trying to keep a girl around and let her compete with her friends in a silly materialistic "contest".
If I was to get engaged again, I'd rather have some unique ring with a neat metal design and maybe some small coloured stones. If the guy spent over $200, I'd probably tell him he was crazy and foolish with his money. And be extremely uncomfortable accepting such an expensive gift. The price of the ring doesn't show the love and devotion of the partner. That's what the solo trips to the feminine hygiene product aisle are for.

Well, I have loved hockey and played sports more then any of my previous boyfriends. Maybe I'm just a man trapped in a women's body.
Or incredibly cheap...I've been called that too.

Clearly you know nothing about me, and it makes you look lame.
I'd certainly steal a guys girlfriend, treat her like crap, get some excellent sandwiches and a clean house out of the deal, sell her kids for scientific experiments and take the money and blow it at the track.
So I'm just asking where the problem is?
