check out bluenile.ca - Great stuff, you can get investment quality flawless diamonds there with a GCAL certificate. The certs you get at a mall jewller aren't worth the paper they're printed on.
However, with your budget, it's going to be about getting a decent sized diamond for the money. For $1,000 on blue nile, if you get a base-quality diamond (which you should for $1,000, to get a diamond you can actually see) around 0.5carat, and it will still be better than the jewellery store diamonds.

Scratch that - Look on Kijiji or at pawn shops for a good deal. $500 or $1,000 will get you something decent there, it may very well not get you something decent that's new.

For a gift to a girl that you're going to spend the rest of your life with. A symbol of your love.
Yeah, $500.00 probably is gonna get you sneered at by most girls and beaten down by most girls fathers.

I tried to find that Walmart commercial where the bride to be does all her wedding stuff at Walmart... including buying the rings there.

You know, you're exactly right. The whole diamond ring scheme is just one of many things that pisses me off about society these days.
So much time and focus goes into what size the ring cost, and how many carats, and how much you spend, etc. Maybe instead people should focus on the huge decision they are about to commit to; making a life long promise to someone. How about spending some money on a pre-marriage course or something?
No offense to the OP, just something that really irks me.
P.S. - And don't worry OP, in a few years your wife will just want to spend thousands to upgrade the diamond anyways....

To be fair, $500 isn't a lot of money for pretty much anything. It's not going to buy you a car. It's not going to buy you a vacation. Hell, it's not going to buy a new cell phone.
I'm not ring shopping, and never have, but if and when I do, I'll probably spend more on my promise of love than I did on my iphone.

Is it some kind of record to spend your wedding night on the couch, not getting plowed?

You might as well order a fake diamond ring off of the internet.
In otherwards, if you buy her the wrong ring, she's going to start dating the pool boy to spite you.

People that buy $500 rings don't have pool boys.

Put your hand flat on a even cutting board.
Take the knife and cut across the bone between the ring and the knuckle.
Make sure that you have a bag of ice and a towel standing buy.
The ring should fall off of the severed finger once the blood drains out of it.
Side Effects may include . . . crying like a little girl, really cool dripping blood patterns on the ceiling. The cat snatching the finger and running behind the couch, pain, massive blood loss where you halucinate about having sex with Angelina Jolie and you wake up and realize that you actually had sex with Ned Beatty.

Give her $500 bucks and then tell her to go find the ring of her dreams.
Make her prove that her cunning and intelligence are worthy of you.

Or at least that she can give the owner of the jewelers a really good blow job.
