About 5 years ago, I got a job offere at Fort Mac which I turned down because the housing was expensive (average about $400K at that time). Looking back at this article, I should have made the move.
Left 16 years ago, don't regret it one bit. Missed out on the money, sure. Also missed out on the overcrowding, lack of infrastructure and pretty much total destruction of my childhood home.
Remember, dollars don't equate to quality of life. If you were thinking that you could have maybe sold your home a couple years down the line and left Fort Mac, that could have happened in the Calgary housing market too.
Comments like this make me laugh..."Should have moved to Fort Mac", "Should have been born earlier so I could have bought my house cheaper", "Should have worn a condom".
Suck it up, stop living in the past and enjoy what you have now.
Have a lot of great and amazing memories from growing up there, and if you actually live there and make it a home its not as bad as people make it out to be.. But I wouldn't move back. The remoteness gets to me. The people who've "ruined" the city are the ones who just come in to work and leave, the drug users aren't the ones making a life there.
And oh.. Its not frigging "Fort Mac". Do you see a Mac anywhere in McMurray.

Bingo. On both points. Nothing but a bunch of mercenaries up there now. It was once a great place for families. I don't see that anymore. 80% of my friends have left now.

I caught some Property Virgins show or something of the ilk on TV the other day, and it made me really sad to see them looking at 2,600 sq/ft homes in St. Louis in the $100,00 to $120,00 price range.
