Default Door Intercom system: Do we have to give full names?

Kind of an odd question: our condo building has finally taken steps to upgrade it's door intercom system to something a little more current.

Part of this upgrade has been a request to provide the programmer a full name (first and last) for each phone number attached to our unit. We have requested that only our first initials (with our last name) be displayed as we'd rather not have unknown people dialing us at random times asking for us by name.

We're being told that our board has decided the format and there is no possibility for this to happen.

1) are we being overly cautious (we live in the belt-line, beside 3 bars)?
2) can our board actually enforce this restrictive policy? Reason I ask is this is tied to personal security, not your typical condo board BS.

Anyone have any advice or experience with this type of situation?

That sounds pretty unreasonable to me. I can't see why they'd care what you display as your name. I'd just write your first initial in the first name box and last initial in the last name box...

I'd refuse to give my full name for something on public display

Tell them that you'd like to include your military rank.

Thats right my name is Colonel Angus.

The reason we're getting is that it's for "consistency in formatting".

OCD over security. Nice.

Make up first and last names that are each 30 letters long and start with the same letters as your real names. I'll bet they'll be more than happy to take your initials after that.

Why are you all so secretive? What are you hiding from the rest of us?

There's also this approach if you want to be a jerk (and I'm guessing by your location you'll get the joke):

What about those who don't have phones in their unit?

All we're trying to avoid is random drunk people dialing us (connecting to our cell phones) and asking for us by name to let them into the building.

Do we have any sort of leg to stand on, or are we at our condo board's mercy?

The new systems take any phone number, including cell phones.

Wont these drunk guys still be calling up using your last name or made up names instead? not much difference, still getting annoyed by drunks

As far as I know, your name is not covered by any privacy laws, so I suppose that they can require this.

I am not 100% certain though.

I have the same system in my building. Having it go to the cell phone is actually pretty convenient because if I forget my key or loan it to a visitor staying with me, I can just open the front door with my phone.

I do get random calls from the front door at times. If I'm not at home and I see that number on the call display, I simply don't answer.

My condo allows us to simply provide the suite number and "occupant" on the listing. Weird.
