Gravel roads in city....?

Random question (aka my Option86 thread for the week) in the NW, there are a few gravel roads (or just totally crumbled pavement), why would the city let some roads be like this?

One such road is Sheldon Pl NW, up by Market Mall

I believe it has to due with usage (car trips per day) but I'm not certain.

Yeah, but this is a residential area with the road directly infront of homes. Weird, but this looks like all of Edmonton's roads.

Bow Crescent is another one. We have oiled gravel (aka Chinese Pavement) that grows a new set of potholes every spring and every time it rains for more than a couple days in a row.

We sent a valid petition to the city and because of a dirty back-room city council deal (Hodges lives on the street and is opposed, Stephenson's assistant lives on the street and is opposed), the paving project was cancelled at third reading. Instead of letting us pay for it, the City sends out crews 4-5 times a year to patch the holes.

Why would anyone be opposed to paved roads??

People don't like gravel roads, so they {the roads} discourage people from using them.
This is precisely the reason I believe that stretch of 96 avenue has never been paved. That, combined with the narrow corner at Pump Hill Drive keeps cars from cutting through the neighborhood.

There used to be a bunch of gravel roads in the acreages part of Dalhousie.

The fear mongers say that paving it would be turning Bow Crescent into a drag racing strip, complete with fin-backed Chryslers, leather jacket wearing greasers and their prep-school odd-couple girlfriends.

Previous petitions failed because a large portion of the houses are 100' frontage and the standard way was to pay per metre but the recent effort included the folk at the end of the cul-de-sac and divided the cost evenly by household.

You are correct, it is still part of the MD of Rockyview. A friend of mine's parents live there.

I've never understood why there are a few gravel roads here and there in Calgary. It's definitely odd. There's one just north of Queen Elizabeth High School parallel to 5th Ave NW.

I'm gonna look into it.

He explained it once, I forget the details. It was never annexed into the city as it grew up around it though - as I recall.

It's not a gravel road per se, but there is an alley, that looks like any other alley, off of Centre Street North that has a huge sign that says something to the effect of "this alley can become dangerously unstable in thaw conditions" or some such dire warning.

I've often wondered what exactly happens in that alley - does it swallow cars whole or something? The sign is so disproportionately large and grave that some serious **** must go down come thaw..

The deal is --that when annexed, the property pays continues to taxes at the rural mill rate until the streets/ service is upgraded...

Those houses are in Calgary... but are still paying taxes at the Rocky View county rate.

...so you don't want a paved street because then you pay the same millrate as the rest of calgary.


if i recall... the old clubhouse for the Hells angels (formerly the local chapter of the kings crew) was still paying rural property taxes until the building was expropriated by the city.

I grew up in Dalhousie and that was definitely a rumor going around all the kids believed, so he may have actually thought he was telling you the truth lol.

Saddleridge industrial roads are still gravel. But there's probably more examples of that kind of street that haven't been improved.

Also, 84th Ave and 88th Ave here. and 89th Ave here.
