Canada can lose by 70 and come out with their heads held high. Same cant be said for France after yesterday.
Former captain Gareth Rees has a good column today at TSN about yesterdays farce. http://tsn.ca/story/?id=377168

Indeed. But one simply can't expect an honourable performance out of the French, regardless of the sport.
And woo! We scored a try!

Looking at the stats (just now able to turn tv on now) Canada certainly not mailing it in, great character to score first and then stick with it as clearly the much weaker opponent to get a try at the end of the half.

Canada is giving a good effort, but it is very clearly pros against amateurs.

Canada is doing what they can. If they could somehow mount a better scrum that would be a big gain though.

Its the tackling that the Canadians are struggling with. They are not stopping the iniital player in their tracks as they do do lesser opponents, and so by the time they get help, the ball has been offloaded and New Zealand are off to the races with space and outnumbering defenders.

HUGE hit by Klieberger(sp) to save a try. Both are knocked out.

Good effort by Canada. They were just playing a much better team and despite their effort and energy. I was really hoping that they could finish third...that is definitely disappointing. That said they were in the game with France and should've beaten Japan. Hopefully things are improved heading to 2015.

did you see how hard Kleeberger hit the turf after knocking heads?
If that had been on the ice, it's a career ender.

Game takes from the weekend:
Canada/NZ: Great show by Canada. NZ is going to win the whole tournament so not shocking to lose by a lot. I felt bad for the Canadian tighthead prop who spent all the scrums in the air, bent in half, looking at his balls.
Eng/Scotland: England is going to have to pull their head out of their ass if they want to advance beyond France. Their kicking is #### and they make far too many handling errors. Scotland really missed Murray against Argentina. If he had played in that game I believe they would have made the QF as well.
Italy/Ireland: Ireland is the dark horse in this tournament imo. They play with a lot of heart and you can see the support they provide to each other during the game. The one that stands out to me was when the number 10 came in an congratulated the tighthead prop after a strong scrum. Italy is the dirtiest rugby team. It is disgusting to see the amount of stamping they do in the ruck and that eye gouge was terrible.
I didn't watch Wales/Fiji or Aus/Rus.
Knockout rounds.
Ire/Wales
Eng/France
SA/Aus
NZ/Arg
Ire/Eng
SA/NZ
NZ/IreIt really sucks that only one of NZ/Aus/SA are able to advance to the finals, they have been the 3 best teams in the tournament imo.

Russia really tried hard in their first ever World Cup appearence. They played the 2nd half against Australia nearly even and showed flashes of brilliance. They played honourably in their other group matches at well.
Wales looked strong but this was the worst Fijian team I've ever seen. Here is a former quarterfinalist losing 66-0 to Wales, 60something-0 to South Africa and lost by 40 to Samoa. In the past, Fiji were at least exciting and high-scoring even if they didn't win. This entire World Cup, they showed nothing.

Not finishing 3rd might well work out the best for Canada. The challenge of getting there can help spur a program which is making strides. That Wales team program was certainly a boost. They need more of the te3m playing pro. Their players have to be playing lots of games.
They also, and I think they intend to, need to enter as many of the IRB seven's tourney's as possible.
Games played for experience, games played for skill development and depth, depth, depth is what is needed.
