Calling a 1% tax penny tax is sneaky. Oh, it's only a 1% penny tax, so the GST must be a dime tax. Call it what it is, don't insult my intelligence.

Sure, thought I don't see how roads (necessity) are comparable to opera houses or arenas (not).

You can call the GST a nickel tax, if that makes you feel better when you pay it.

Okey, if you want to think that a 1% consumption tax levy, that has made the news and would be voted on in a public plebiscite, is "sneaky" simply because it's being metaphorically referred to as something else that constitutes 1% then go right ahead. Sneaky implies subterfuge and it obviously isn't... it's just a colloquial term for the concept. Lighten up yo.

No, that's capitalism. Democracy is something completely different.

I'd think he'd want to partipate in the forum to get a sense of the public's mood without having to take questions, defend positions, take criticism, etc. He'd come on here and probably would never post, if he came on at all. He may already be here. Maybe I'm Nenshi.

Oh, that makes sense. It would be amazing if he did sign up and chat from time to time in civic issue threads, though. CP's the number one site for Calgary related discussion, imo.

I've been out of province for a while, but correct me if I'm wrong: This penny tax is a 1% tax on services? Can municipalities even do that?

Lucky I wasn't there or I would have totally hammered Nenshi. Mar says no taxes, Nenshi says more taxes. Easy choice.

What did he have to say? Was it for decent reasons and things that were policy driven as far as municipalities go?
I wouldn't want another battle between the premier and mayor....

Not really. Mar clarified his position.

Keep in mind that new sources of revenue are needed for CAPITAL not operating. So if we are ever in the next century going to build the SE LRT for instance new revenue is needed. That or the City will have to keep going begging cap in hand all the time, and that benefits no one.

So if the mayor decided to freeze or reduce property taxes, what city services should be reduced or axed? Police, fire, libraries, roads, parks, sanitation, etc.?
Nenshi has already gone to city departments and asked them to find inefficiencies so tax increases could be kept to a minimum. Comparing the province to the city is like comparing apples to oranges. Different sources of revenue with different challenges.
Sure, reduce property taxes, but realize that the result would be less services.

Yes, the other big difference is the City is not allowed to run a deficit.
