I just read something on a Tampa Bay site were it sounds like if their is a tiebreaker come Thursday Matt Moore or Jeff Niemann would get the start.

^ There is a tiebreaker game? Are you serious? It doesn't go by head-to-head wins or something like it does in other sports? If so, that's great!

Yes, it happens about once every 2-3 years.

The Yankees haven't named a starter yet. Are they going to throw oilers_fan out there to pitch?
fleury: yes there's a one game showdown. On Thursday.
If still tied:
Boston at Tampa at 2pm MT
Atlanta at St. Louis at 6pm MT

I thought Moneyball was fantastic. If you are not a baseball fan, you may not enjoy it quite as much. Ebert:
http://www.rogerebert.com/apps/pbcs....0929999/-1/RSS
"Moneyball," a smart, intense and moving film that isn't so much about sports as about the war between intuition and statistics.
It centers on the character of the Oakland Athletics' general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), who after a bad start as a MLB player, moved over to management and was driven by his hatred of losing.
This is really a movie about business.
All that matters is that you win the last game of the season.
It is the "hatred of losing" that informs the whole movie. Beane lost his major league dreams, his wife, and I think it is his fear of losing his daughter that keeps him in Oakland. The scenes with his daughter were some of the best moments in the movie.
Moneyball was written by Zaillian and Sorkin, and there are some scintillating scenes that reminded me of the intense dialogue in The Social Network. Ex. the war room with the scouts, Beane meeting Peter Brand in Cleveland, and Beane's meeting with the Red Sox.
The acting was uniformly great. Philip Seymour Hoffman is barely recognizable as Art Howe. The score is very minimal, and melancholy.
I don't know how the book compares.

Words cannot express how much I want the Red Sox to complete the collapse today. I used to really like em but I'm so sick of Hollywood slobbering all over them since they won in '04.
Saw Moneyball last night, and at the end the movie claims the '04 Red Sox won the WS by using Billy Beane of the A's strategy of getting cheap players and smart strategy instead of stars to win. The '04 Sox had the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, what are you even talking about???
PLEASE finish the epic collapse tonight...

I thought that was an odd statement at the end of the movie too.

Rumors abound on twitter that the Red Sox are trying to swing a trade for a starting pitcher in the case they go to a tie breaker.

I haven't seen the movie, however I do believe the Red Sox did adopt this philosophy to a certain extent. The difference being that they could afford the superstar players that hit many key statistical categories that the A's simply couldn't afford (acquiring Curt Shilling for example). While that seems to be a no brainer, I do believe they traded Nomar based on this philosophy much to the chagrin of Red Sox Nation.
That said, Go Rangers!

I hate crap like that, I remember when Alomar was still a Jay and sat out the last few games of the season ('95?) before he was a UFA to keep his .300 average. Total selfish move.

Somewhere, Ted Williams is sneering at him as well. Speaking of Ted, 70 years now since anyone has hit .400

Ya, when Williams could have sat out the final day of the season and not played in a double header to protect his .400 average he decided to play, and went 6 for 8, finishing at .406! Suck on that Reyes.

I remember John Olerud's quest for that like it was yesterday.

Quite amazing when both leagues have 2 teams each in an all tie situation and all down to 1 deciding game.
I am not sure if the playoff game starts tomorrow. Don't they need 1 day for travel?

They have to travel overnight. Both playoff games tomorrow. Then the winners play in the playoffs on Saturday.
