You'll have to forgive the crudeness of this drawing. I didn't have time to paint or draw it to scale:

Even though Sliver said he is not affected by the sight of needles, it looks obvious to me from this drawing that he fainted at the sight of one.
Seriously though, what restaurant was this Sliver and did you happen to use the restroom that night? If so, was the bathroom in a state where the diabetic person could have gone and injected himself with relative ease? From the picture, it looks like he has a bag and a needle out and I know some small, trendy, upscale restaurants that have real tiny bathrooms with no counter space at all.
For those who do not like the sight of needles, would it be ok if you went into a bathroom in a restaurant and saw someone injecting themselves? I'm guessing you would still feel nauseous but would you still consider it a bit rude that someone was injecting themselves in the bathroom rather than inside a bathroom stall?
These types of threads are always an interesting and fun read on CP. I think last months version was about taking pets onto a plane. I look forward to seeing what next month will bring.

Seriously, how difficult is it to excuse yourself to the rest room to do this? It takes no effort, and it's polite to those around you.

Personally, the sight of seeing a needle going into skin makes me nauseous. That begs the question, if I am unable to eat the meal that I have ordered- who pays for the wasted food? The restaurant? The diabetic? Or am I on the hook?
|
Well I wasn't there so I'm not sure how private he was trying to be about it. There were probably patrons on the other side of him as well, Sliver just happened to be on the side he picked.
Is it possible he wasn't taking every possible effort not to upset or gross out fellow patrons? Sure. Heck, it may be even possible he's one of those exceptionally rude and weird people that LIKES to make people feel weird and uses excuses to do it. But I doubt it. I can't make calls on any of this. I do feel that there needs to be more understanding though.
As for the wasted meal, well I'm not sure how seriously to take that comment. It's not something he's doing on purpose to spoil your meal. It's something he needs to do. And trust me, it's not something that he's looking forward to doing. I don't know what the options were that were available to him, but at a point it starts getting a little silly. Like walking to the car? Seriously? What if they're parked several blocks away? Take it outside? So he looks like a junkie shooting in the street? Not to mention doing it sitting down is going to be easier then doing it leaned up against a building. When people start saying stuff like this it's getting to the realm where people with disabilities are being treated like second class citizens.

You'll be the one to pay because it's unreasonable to expect anyone else to, and it's just bad luck, just like not being able to look at a needle going into skin is bad luck.
My wife has a phobia with snakes. Guy walks into the restaurant with snake skin boots or a picture of a snake on his shirt or something like that after we order. My wife can't eat or we have to leave because if we don't she'll freak out.
Who's responsible? Same thing, no one, it's just bad luck.

This isn't too far from what happened to my date and I recently. We were at a restaurant and the lady sitting beside us must have cats or something, because my date had a allergic reaction (possibly to lingering cat hair). She didn't react right away, so we were able to order our food. We had to leave after the food was ordered, so we packed up and left. Yeah, no one was responsible. I can't blame that lady for having cats. Just bad luck.

I wouldn't inject myself in the rest room. There are hygiene risks.

For reference, here's an insulin auto injector;
I can't say what the person in Slivers case was using, but a lot of patients use these. I imagine most peoples needle phobia isn't strong enough to spot this in a dimly lit restaurant and identify it as such.

Win/win - no expense of a meal, and no bloated feeling.

Like I said there are possibly reasons why they wouldn't.
If it's more than a simple thing to do then I'd rather do it at a table with more personal space around me where I know someone isn't going to be standing next to me or bumping me or knocking whatever onto the floor. Or setting something like that in a counter in a bathroom.
Or maybe the bathroom didn't even HAVE a counter, I've seen lots of places with pedestal sinks only.
I don't think anyone disagrees that with no other considerations going and doing it in the bathroom would have been better overall, but in that specific case we don't know if there were other considerations.
What people think of as "polite" can change too, why not change polite to include people taking medication.. when what's "polite" developed the guy taking insulin would be dead so the situation just never came up.

I didn't go to the bathroom so maybe the sink was too small...not sure there. I'll do a recon mission at a later date to satisfy my own curiosity.
This was definitely a needle with a plunger, not that auto-pen thing or whatever Yasa posted.

Looks like the atropine injectors that we had to carry around with us in the army.

What would the army do with atropine? Nerve gas treatment?

I still don't understand why people think it is too insanitary to eat in a bathroom but they see nothing wrong with someone injecting insulin in the bathroom?
