Well, the diabetic could die. Doubtful the other person would be incovienenced as much.

Really, how could the diabetic die by excusing himself to go to the car or the washroom?

Here's the thing- how do you know not to look there? Are you expecting the diabetic to announce what he is about to do?

Apparently its a toss up..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trypanophobia

Although most phobias are dangerous to some degree, trypanophobia is one of the few that actually kills. In cases of severe trypanophobia, the drop in blood pressure caused by the vasovagal shock reflex may cause death. In Dr. Hamilton's 1995 review article on needle phobia, he was able to document 23 deaths as a direct result of vasovagal shock during a needle procedure.

I don't know about you, but I'm not able to really avoid what my eyes see until after they see it. I've been working on a prototype to avoid that but it still needs work.

You see a needle - you look away. And we are talking about a diabetic injection, not an amniocentesis.

It takes effort to see it. A little too much effort if you're at a different table.

vasovagal?

Are you sure that is the right word?

I could use a vasovagal shock reflex every now and again.

You must be the weirdest guy in a restaurant. Do you just stare intently at the person your with and make occasional glances at the table/food? You don't ever look around the room and see other people, other people who might be doing things?

And how do you know how easy it was to see what was going on in this instance? Were you there? Someone in this thread said that a diabetic injection takes 5 seconds, this apparently took 90. I think I'd notice a 90 second injection taking place in my line of vision.

Like I said, maybe there weren't options, or good options. And I'm probably going to side with the person who has to endure a treatment to prevent death as to knowing whats the best for them, as opposed to someone who is worried about having their dinning experience ruined by something that doesn't affect them. He did admit he said he doesn't have a real problem with needles.

And while there is a medical condition that gives people an irrational fear of needles, that's far different than a 'is it proper etiquette case'. The latter wouldn't be a medical condition and therefore your argument wouldn't be valid.

At that point I have seen it. I'm not talking about having seen the entire process of seeing the needle being prepped. I'm talking about loking over at the moment of impact. It's a little too late at that point.

A small amount of consideration is all that is needed. And that happens all the time. Last year at a Flames game the parents of a child who appeared normal but was really "special" made a point of saying something to him as he came over to me that made it obvious their son was "special." With that consideration, I knew he was small child with his actions, and not the 16 year old he appeared to be.

Heh, that is pretty interesting. Though it's obviously a lot more rare than diabetes.

And I would suggest that if someone did have a bad case of this they would have every right to go over to the person and ask them to do it somewhere else. Like I said, respect and etiquette is a two way street, but there also needs to be discresion by both parties. One cant assume to automatically know what the other party needs or is prone to.

Yeah, I'm the weirdest guy at the restaurant because I'm tolerant of other people's medical conditions.

And like I said before, we are talking about a diabetic needle not an amniocentesis. They are tiny and take effort to see.

What about injecting himself on the side of his body facing his guests? So that only his friends could see and not the other patrons?

Personally, the sight of seeing a needle going into skin makes me nauseous. That begs the question, if I am unable to eat the meal that I have ordered- who pays for the wasted food? The restaurant? The diabetic? Or am I on the hook?

Insist the diabetic pays. See where that gets you.

Agreed. It's not as thought you're going to drop dead right then and there without the injection. Excuse yourself, do it somewhere discretely and then come back and enjoy your dinner.

No you're the weirdest guy because you seem to think that people who notice what other people are doing are somehow abnormal. Seriously, where do you look when you're sitting at a restaurant? I mean I've had some really good dinner companions that have held my attention, but even then I tend to look around on occasion, and before I started killing my eyes with the internets I would have easily noticed something like a diabetic needle at the next table.

No, the issue is you are not looking at this objectively. It seems it doesn't bother you; which is fine. But that does not give you the right to be condescending towards those of us that do have an issue.

I think this is great advice.

Edit: I like that you came into this thread overly pissy and are continuing to follow that path. Notice how others are acknowledging that there's room for everyone to compromise while you go on being unreasonable?

Why don't you try answering the question? Who is responsible for the wasted meal?

How do you know it was medication. Maybe it was one of the guys off of "Intervention".
