I will let him get to the next election before I cast judgement for or against.

The one thing he really needs to work on is his personal appearance - I know it shouldnt matter but it most definately does matter from a respect pov and he is just plain sloppy looking.

The other thing, what is with the ridiculously long blinks he takes durring interviews - wtf is with that.

Also I dont like the fact he is wasting time trying to convince the East that Calgary is a great place to live and work. Let the East think they are important while we fly under the radar.

I think I'd respect someone a lot more for a good set of accomplishments and track record rather than their blinky sloppy appearance, but that's just me. Slightly sloppy transparent mayor who gets things done > Well dressed/presented corrupt mayor who squanders our money and creates conflicts.

I don't think that the motivation behind it is to make Torontonians flock here in droves, or even to envy us. There are a tonne of investors and businesses in Ontario, and enhancing the perception of Calgary as a good place to do business isn't a bad thing.

A kids' soccer field or playground is part of regular capital expenses (and cheap). If they want to raise money for a special project (e.g. new arena), make patrons pay.

The point is that people have a choice. If they vote it down then alternative funding would have to be found for it.

To be honest, it is likely going to be tough to pass any referendum to increase taxes in Calgary. We do not like taxes here. However, if the project is deemed worthy enough it will be passed by the majority.

It makes city hall more accountable for their projects and gives the people a direct voice in how the money is to be spent.

This is democracy at it's purest.

He takes his promises seriously and thus far has advanced his plans forward quite far.

Some things like getting the airport tunnel, completely changing the budget process (now zero-based reviews), eliminating the park and ride fee, posting his meetings and expenses, video archives of Council, securing the funding for a new central library and 4 major rec centers, initiating the airport bus and facilitating food trucks happen quickly. But, other major promises like "fixing the planning and development system" and meaningfully cutting red tape across the City are long term, very comprehensive and complex processes that will take years to really see the benefit - but are happening.

Yes, but what else other than all of that.

Don't agree. Why didn't I get to vote on the airport tunnel which I see no sense in building? Point is, Nenshi is the elected mayor, if he wants to build new library or arts programs, he should do it within the budget. It is sneaky to introduce a 1% tax calling it penny tax and hope no one will notice.

If every time a hospital, road, school needs to be built, a new tax is introduced, hey, I can do that job too. The tough part is to build this within your means or budget.

A: It wouldn't be sneaky,
B: It would be building within the means and budget... the extra 1% increases both.

Really if your expectation is that you never pay a dollar more in taxes I'm afried you're in for a lifetime of disappointment. Inflation increases the cost of everything and #### needs to be paid for. Frankly it beats the hell out of increasing the property tax and in many (albeit not all) instances I would find instituting users fees to be against the public good.
