What large outdoor events would we be adding to the slate?

Well, if we consider 9 home games plus 1 preseason game, plus a home playoff game most years - that would be 11, which is technically not 10.

I think the major upgrading the Stamps need to do at McMahon relate to the concourse, and maybe adding a partial roof. Some endzone pubs would be great as well. The sightlines at McMahon are tremendous, and there are really no bad seats in the house, with the exception of the first few rows in the endzones.
Not to mention the stadium is in a pretty killer location.
I just think that unless someone steps up from the private sector, we're stuck with McMahon for a long time. IIRC, the Stamps were looking at building high rises on the practice fields, and using the money generated from that towards improving McMahon. Sounds like it's our best bet.

The police chief/mayor probably suggested it. Worried the media would stir up the howling mobs (outside the local area) that would swoop in and cause a riot and burn the place down.

Looks good, that place badly needed it. Was living out there in 04-05 and went to a couple Lions games. I always thought it looked cool on TV, but it looked way worse when you were there. The ceiling was filthy, and there's just no atmosphere in there at all.
I'm not kidding when I say it was so bad that me and an Als fan friend of mine went to a Lions/Als game there, and we actually left at halftime to go watch it at a pub across the street. It was that depressing in there.

May be in the minority here, but the new BC "spider dome" is an eyesore.
It does not look anything like the photos in real life. It looks like an old stadium with a bunch of steel on top. Some serious MySpace photography going on with this one.

yea if the stamps built a dome it would get used more, but it would have to be a convertable more than a sunroof. most of the season is played when it is beautiful outside, and it would be an adjustment for people after all these years of an open air stadium. probably makes the most sense to build one with a retractable roof though, then we could get concerts in there (avoiding stupid noise restriction nimbys). I would love to see a new stadium, and it would make the playoff games much more comfortable! but they woudl need some major corporate money to get it done

They just need to expropriate a few blocks east of 24th Ave for the Train development and motel village revitalization and pave over some of the houses to silent the opposition.
But kidding aside, even if the stadium is only used 10 times a year, it's a dump. The city deserves better.

True. but I'm quite certain that wasn't his point, although it appears he's going to pretend that it was.

What are you comparing it to? It's not glamorous by any means, but it's not all that different than the majority of stadiums around NA that are only used for 8-10 football games a year. I've been to games at a number of major US colleges and the seating, concourses and facilities were pretty much the same as those at McMahon.

Are you sure about that? I know at one time that was true, but recently they've held Lilith Fair and Monsters of Rock there. Not to mention Aerosmith was scheduled to play there a couple of summers ago before Steven Tyler hurt his back.

I'm looking forward to catching a Whitecaps game in the new digs next season.
BC Place was downright unbearable on a warm summer evening with the old roof.. like a sauna.

Yes, I think they did make a few exceptions recently, but I think the permit is hard to get.

I think all McMahon stadium needs is a wider concourse with more food/beer outlets and a much more relaxed policy towards tailgating.
The new BC Place looks nice, but there's no point in Calgary spending that much money to replace McMahon.

I'm sure it's an upgrade amenity-wise over Empire Field, but I'm wondering if Whitecaps fans will miss the intimacy of the smaller setting, as well as being outdoors for a soccer game?

I can't wait to go to a couple of Whitecap games there. No matter what you think of how it looks, it is very unique and adds to the architectural diversity of the city.
RE McMahon, I always thought it should have been covered with a dome since it would increase its utility from Dec to May.

Lenarduzzi and co. have been pretty adamant in their stance that the seats will be closer to the field that at Empire, especially in the end zone areas. At Empire, there was a good 20 yards between the net and the seats. This apparently won't be the case at BC Place. The seats come right down to field level. I'll believe it when I see it.
They obviously can't replicate the open air in a stadium and that will definitely turn some soccer fans off. As a soccer fan myself, I don't like the idea of watching a game indoors. It will be good on a nice night though.
I'm still pissed about the waterfront stadium fiasco of a few years ago. That would have been so sweet.
