I think if you had a list of the best young actors/actresses, it would be a far far far shorter list. The abilities of the actors have gone down significantly over the past 30 years or so. There's only a handful of really good ones and a big pile of terrible actors. There are really only a select few that have the same gravitas as some of the past greats.

Edward Norton, Daniel Day Lewis. Not many that I can think of off the top of my head.

Blashphemy, watch Amelie, she's amazing in that movie.

I have to disagree. True, there are a lot, A LOT of really terrible young actors these days that only get parts because they look good, but there were a ton of bad actors 30 years ago as well. There are a lot of bad 80's movies because of the acting.

But in those days acting was acting, these days everyone acts (rappers, musicians, dancers, sport stars, etc.) and the art has really taken a beating because of it.

I find there is a lot more tolerance for females who are bad actresses (as long as they are attractive) and it seems like more are these days. Of course, men have the overall advantage because ugly men can still get decent roles. Ugly women, not matter how talented, have a harder time.

I don't necessarily see a huge gender difference, but I definitely think that audiences are much more tolerant of terrible acting. I don't think Hollywood has ever been worse than it is right now and people's standards have gone way down.

When I see a movie I dislike due to the acting, it's usually pretty forgettable.

One actor who I don't like, but movie after movie blows me away, is Leonardo DiCaprio. Not sure why I dislike him, but her knocks it out of the park every time!

I used to dislike him too and I'm not exactly sure why either I think maybe it has something to do with his earlier movies that I hated like Titanic and Romeo & Juliet. Really like his newer stuff though, The Departed was especially great.

Saw Wayne's World while flipping around today - forgot how god awful Tia Carrere is as an actress. I haven't been able to listen to Ballroom Blitz since she destroyed it

Justin Timberlake is so horrible, Ashton Koosher is a close second.

There's always been a place in Hollywood for attractive women (and men) who can't act. We just don't remember most of them decades later.

Why is Edward Norton in so many people's top 5?
Aside from American History X and Fight Club, which are both amazing movies with talented directors and solid scripts, what has he done that further shows his acting chops?

He hasn't made any (or very few) bad movies. Apparently a bad movie or two means that actor now sucks.

I thought he was good in Primal Fear (I think that's what it was called, the one with Richard Gere), but quite bad in the movie Stone.

I liked him in Romeo & Juliet...that was an awesome telling of the story.

Leo is pretty great in every movie he does. I watched Catch Me if You Can on Netflix the other day (Leo and Tom Hanks)...that's a pretty good movie if you haven't seen it.

I thought he was great in the 25th Hour.

Apart from what's already been mentioned, I thought Ed Norton did a great job as the Hulk and wish he would be returning for The Avengers. In Kingdom of Heaven, he had a mask on the whole time and was completely brilliant. The Painted Veil was a beautiful movie, and, despite many people not liking Death to Smoochy, Keeping the Faith, or Leaves of Grass, I personally laughed through all three.

DiCaprio hasn't made a bad movie since 2000 (I consider The Beach "bad" even though I still enjoy it)

No way!!! That was Norton? I remember thinking his voice sounded familiar, and I remember deciding that whoever played the king must have been the same guy who played a Vorta on Star Trek: DS9.
