Wise Wood, Francis, Notre Dame and O'Byrne should all be strong this year in Div I.

Notre Dame?? Man, never even heard of that school. Just looked it up, opened the year after I moved away, in '05. Makes sense why I never heard of it. They had a quick rise didn't they, already beating St. Francis.
Grandin was neck and neck with Francis when I went to school there, then O'Byrne opened and all the kids south of Anderson started going there, the Ghosts have never recovered (though last I heard they're slowly climbing back to semi-respectability).

Some schools do a really good job of building a foundation to ensure their senior teams are always strong. St. Francis is the obvious example but some of the newer schools, like Notre Dame and Bishop O'Byrne, seem to be building similar programs. Wise Wood quietly keep on fielding strong teams every year also.
Has anyone checked out the new fields at Shouldice Park? Really impressive place to watch high school football, but they have apparently run into some issues with the new turf.

The problem was the city left the sprinklers on all night prior to installation day.

Wise Wood? Not debating that but my div 3 team manhandled them a couple years ago in an exhibition. Good to see them turning it around and looking good. Helps when you get some better athletes.
As for the OP, William Aberhart should walk away with div 3. No idea about div 2.

I try to stay up on it...not enough folks know how strong the Calgary high school league is....and one of them might actually have a shot this year as Raymond may have an off year.

Thought I would bump this thread.
Was looking online and it looks like there were some upsets in the senior semifinals yesterday. In Div 1, Bishop O'Byrne knocked off Francis and will play Notre Dame. In Div 2, Crescent Heights beat Centennial and will play Grandin in the finals.
Finals will be played this Saturday at Shouldice. Haven't been to a high school game in over a decade, but I might head down and watch one or both games...

Crescent win over Centennial was a come from nowhere one according to my brother-in-law who had a son playing in the game. Crescent basically did nothing till late in the 4th. Then scored a touchdown followed by an interception, followed by another touchdown. Went from being throttled to a 18-17 win in five minutes.

Surprising that Crescent is Div.2..... When I went there they were Div.3, and they basically let anyone who showed up for tryouts on the team as there wasn't much interest.

Yeah, a lot of population shifts around the city has changed the landscape quite a bit. I went to Pearson and we were typically right there with Francis every year for quite a while, but that generation of players graduated and the following groups had little interest so the program died.

In High Schools it is all about who is in charge. Crescent got a new principal a few years back and he had done a great job. Hired the right people and got the whole sports program back on track. Football up to Div2. Basketball winning City Championships and moving up divisions. Track winning City's etc.

A big part is the demographics of your community too. Football doesn't go up a division and basketball doesn't win a title if you have 14 people show up to play football and your starting 5 averages 5'2".
