Also, if anyone is looking for good ways to get home and still have your vehicle, try Keys Please. I assumed those services that get you and your car home would be stupidly expensive, but surprisingly, it's barely more than taking a taxi.

Now granted the first guy that drove me home was ranting about "non white" people and what a burdon they are, and how easy it would be to whipe out entire races. But hey, at least I got home safely.

Yeah, I was jamming at a house a couple of years ago and the police were called to shut us down. I went to leave but realized the cop car was still parked on the street, right beside my car.

Being afraid that he'd pull me over as soon as I tried to leave after seeing all the beer cans in the house, I awkwardly walked up and asked him for advice, saying I had 4 beers over the last 3 hours or so, and and he just said "put it this way, I'd drive after that, so you should be fine."

So I don't know, something seems a little out of place with the OP's story. Three drinks over the course of an evening shouldn't have you blowing over .08.

Wait, this is what you blew after 3 drinks???

Jesus, in that case, I think I'm starting to believe that one of jar_e's ideas is likely true.

My lawyer called them "house" drinks because they aren't usually measured, just poured into a cup unlike at a pub or restaurant. For argument sake you could consider the drinks to be 3-5 drinks (1 beer/2 mixed) or (1 beer/2mixed doubles), somewhere in between there is what he explained to me.

To clarify my point, here's a very ROUGH guideline on alcohol consumption within a one hour period with a 12 oz beer.

http://www.ohsinc.com/alcohol_abuse_..._BAC_CHART.htm

In theory, if you weighed between 90-190 lbs, 3 drinks in an hour could put you over .08.

Sheesh...

It's too bad you have to go through that for having a few drinks after work...

There is virtually no reason that car companies can't install systems in all new cars to deter drunk driving....

Maybe the thing you blew into wasn't calibrated properly.

6 month suspension and $500. Similar scenario to what you described. Best learning experience of my life and I am now on a zero tolerance policy for myself.

I blew just over the amount they could give me a 24 hour suspension. Mind you this was about 16 years ago...

If they were poured to double quantity, would 5 drinks put me at .130? It's possible they were doubles, like I said they weren't measured and certainly not more than doubles.

Anyone know of penalties someone of my similar situation faced?

As am I! Spending the night in a jail cell has put more fear in me than anything else.
When were you charged? Was this recent or years ago?
Thanks for the info.

Some 15 years ago a co worker beat a DUI as the officer didn't show up for the trial. Judge tossed the DUI out.

My friend blew 1.2, I believe. He went through a lot, but he also got a bit of a screw around, so I'm not sure his situation was the norm. They kept bumping his court appearances, and I beileve he wasn't able to drive for about two years, as he didn't get any credit for the time he wasn't allowed to drive while waiting to find out his punishment. He also paid a few thousand to a lawyer when all was said and done, but others in this thread seem to suggest you can get by with a lot less.

There should not be a need for people to follow the law.

I've never understood why people drink and drive.

How many people need to die before people call a cab?

These threads drive me nuts because of the entitlement to drink a few after work and then get in your car. Fools.

Accept the reality that you were drunk under Alberta law. Don't try to weasel out of it, but take the sting of punishment as a life lesson going forward....and be thankful that you didn't cause harm to someone else.

These threads are bad enough, but the attitudes in small town Alberta is even worse.
Honest question. Have you ever had a beer then drove? Ever?
I'm not trying to paint myself innocent but it's a difficult line for people who choose to have 1, 2 or 3 drinks and know if they are still under .08 but know they are fully capable of driving. Yes the simple solution is to drink none, but it may also take away from social gatherings whether it be as simple as a beer at the office at the end of the week. My office does it and there is a dozen or so guys who have 2,3,4 drinks before heading home. The line isn't as definitive as some may think and as I have learnt.
