I think they do okay at lunch, and sell a lot of margaritas Friday after work. The food is crap - made in Edmonton, frozen, and sent to Calgary.

The place across from Julios has failed about 10 times in the last 10 years. The Bottlehouse seems to have beat the curse, for now.

They sublease their property holdings to the franchisees, at about 40 points markup, making real estate a bigger income vehicle than burgers:

There's some stores in Eau Claire that I wonder how the hell they haven't rolled over and died yet.

Hell, that market should have been dead long ago, but it's the food court that's keeping it semi-alive.

What a damn shame. It is now a weird combination of niche stores and office space. Depressing.

Hopefully the redevelopment of the property will go ahead within the next 10 years or so. It would be nice.

Is that weird/awesome Egyptian type store still open in Eau Claire? I always wanted to go drop like 10k in there on a life size King Tut statue and obelisks and other crazy ####.

I don't know how A&W is still in business since they now charge $25 for a crappy burger and a root beer.

I can't stand a&w food but nothing beats rootbeer in a frosted beer mug.

Fast food is expensive in Canada but it's probably better that way. Here in the States $2 gets you a burrito, doritos and a pop at good ole Taco Bell. That's cheaper than any meal you can get at a grocery store. That creates a pretty lousy incentive.

As someone who works in the retail site selection business once told me, a big part of it is branding/marketing. You may not buy the Sony item in that store, but simply walking by it and/or quickly browsing through it keeps the brand in your mind.

The big banks often employ the same principle with many of their branch locations. A lot of it is about visibility.

Old women.

As for Marlborough Mall, it is a good site for TOD, not necessarily all low income housing. Some could be included in a TOD though.

Deer Valley Mall has actually seen expansion on the site with a couple strips of offices and stores on part of their parking lot on the east side. The mall itself is certainly dying and/or depressed though. I think the Co-op does fairly well, but that's about the only thing. I think the Zellers is actually the only one in the city that Target isn't going to re-brand/renovate into one of their stores. Not sure what will end up happening to it.

Not just Alberta, try the Prairies. Porcupine Plain, SK had 3 of them on main street.
