Ummm, show me an officially released DVD where Han shoots first and I'll buy it.
And its not just Han, its all that other silly crap he added in. No small amount of doctoring the film was going to transform it into some masterpiece, and were the stupid changes he added making it that much better? No. Therefore he should have left it as is.
I clearly stated before in another thread I've been around these boards a LOOOONG time. Following like many since 2004 when I first ventured into online chats. Just never posted before. Usualy I don't because there's so many internet ######s out there that getting into argument's with them is such an utter waste of time. But if you want to insult my posts with your utter lack of knowledge, or twist truths into your own theories like Flip has done, don't get your panties in a knot if I call you on it.
Well, with James Earl Jones supplying the voice to Darth Vader, many thought he was under the suit, but he wasn't. However, if you had his ghost there, things would have been a bit awkward, since Luke would have to have been black, not white.
Though I suppose one could argue that at that point in time in the future, changing a baby's skin color in utero wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

Wasn't the movie set "a long time ago"? (though, they had warp speed interstellar travel; seems like baby changes would be easy!)

I agree, and I bought the special addition DVD that came with the unaltered trilogy. Some people don't seem to understand that there is a huge difference with improving the visual and sound quality of the film and blatantly changing #### in the process. I want the original trilogy on Blu-Ray but I want Lucas' new changes left out. That DVD release was a pretty lame attempt to appeal to the fans but at least I have a copy of the films.
I respect that they're his films and he has some sort of vision he wants to achieve by reworking the originals but what I cannot seem to grasp is his refusal to release the unaltered films with the audio and visual enhancements. It seems like every other director who creates a "directors cut" at least releases the unaltered version as well. Colour me disappointed... again.
Pretty sure the originals were shot in 2.35:1. Don't know how you could think they were 4:3.
5.1, I probably could have done without but how ####ing lazy are they that there was no formatting for a widescreen TV? It means you have to stretch the image or watch with bars on the top and the sides.
Old Anakin was never a Jedi, young Anakin was. Obi-Wan and Yoda both died Jedis.
Except at the end of Return, Darth Vader showed there was still good in him, when he saved Luke. He redemed himself, and died as a "hero". I hate the fact George inserted young Anakin at the end there, it destroys Darth's redemption.

Like Yoda and Obi-wan, Anakin also died as a Jedi. Where do you think the title of the film Return of the Jedi comes from? It's referring to Anakin's return to the light side. With his dying actions, Anakin ceased to be Vader and became a Jedi once more. Thus, it makes absolutely no sense that Lucas would replace Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen in the last shot of the picture.

Spit in the face of the fans by Lucas.
Admittedly, I haven't watched the DVDs with the "original" releases. I assumed they were widescreen presented in a 4:3 ratio - I don't know if I'm describing that right, I mean with black bars on all sides. Like you know how 16:9 commercials are shown on SD 4:3 channels? Like that.
If that assumption was wrong, then my my bad.
I don't think Vader died as a Jedi I guess. I took 'Return of the Jedi' to mean, "Hey, Luke's a Jedi now!" I get where you're coming from re: the redemption stuff, and the change was completely unnecessary. It just doesn't bother me as much I guess.
While I agree with the points above, I always thought it was called Return of the Jedi, because the Jedi finally had a leader and a direction again and ultimately defeated Vader and the emperor.
The Jedi Order had returned after being purged and destroyed by the sith.
So 40 years later, I still don't understand why Obi Wan disappears when Vader kills him and the light saber doesn't even cut the cloth or burn it.
I didn't get it as a kid, I didn't get it when they seemed to retcon/patronize the fans with the random scene with Ewan Macgregor explaining it at the end of ROTS, and I don't get what Lucas intended in the original film (as back then, the entire universe and force mechanics weren't fleshed out and SW was supposed to be a one-shot).

No, you're correct.
But that's why I'm pissed. Sure it was presented in 2.35:1 but just like the image you posted it wasn't optimized for 16:9 TVs so there's black bars on the top and sides.
Although just for clarification that is a 16:9 image displayed in 4:3. It is even worse watching a 2.35:1 image in 4:3 because the black bars are even bigger on the top and bottom.
What I'm upset with is that all they had to do was optimize the 2.35:1 image for 16:9 TVs. This means that I don't have to use the "zoom" feature on my tv to watch it in widescreen with no bars on the sides. Problem with using the zoom or stretch feature is that it often cuts off some of the image.
Cram as much SW into one movie as possible because he had no idea if he would make another one, let alone that it would become a massive franchise. He might have had an idea about the disappearance back then that got cut...I've never read one though. Let's face it, he changed things as he went and had some large arcs in mind that he fleshed out by making it up as he went along. That's why the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan scene seemed forced, why midichlorians suck, etc. etc.

Pretty sure that the release was a not-so-subtle "F you" from George to the vocal fans who wanted things unaltered. He released them unaltered all right. Dick move by him then, and there's no other way to look at it today IMO.
As mentioned in my first reply ITT though, I am a complete SW whore who always re-buys the movies, so I guess I'm the problem. Sorry guys.
