What about people who just want to drink something, but they don't want pop or juice? Am I a sucker for stopping at a gas station and buying a bottle of water?
How about a crew keeping a case of water in a work truck?
Just because it flows for cheap from a faucet doesn't make it easily portable or convenient. I'm not going to fill up an old 2l coke bottle with water and take it with me for a day of work.
Anyway, I don't really see why it's a "ripoff" to begin with. I want it cold and I want it in individual packages. That's what I'm paying for. I suppose it'd be nice if it was cheaper than pop, but I can't complain that it's the same price because after all, it is the same convenience.
There's easy solutions to your problems, reusable water containers for work, use those large plastic water containers for camping. I mean yeah if you buy a bottle here and there, AND you recycle the mofo sure, no biggie.
But people don't, they buy this crap thinking its better for them and its a plague upon our dumps. The recycling rate in NA is somewhere like 30%, and this crap is filling up our dumps and polluting our oceans (see Texas sized garbage float in south Pacific x3.)
So we know that bottled water is not as safe as tap water, usually loses taste tests against tap water, and has way less regulation (sometimes none, if produced and sold in the same state) than what comes to your tap. Besides the harm it does to our environment, you've got a real massive problem worldwide that we should easily be able to reduce dramatically with education on why its a waste to buy them.
Of course Penn & Teller do it best as usual.
Spoiler!

while i am not so concerned about their pricing - it really annoys me that 7-11 has no shopping carts. I have to load up my arms with some items, and then go over tot he counter to put it down, and then return back to my shopping and repeat several times until i have obtained all the items on my list
I bought one of those vitamin waters at talisman last night after my workout. I didn't feel like having a protein shake, so I figured I would save some $$$ by buying water.
$3.10 each. For flavoured water.
On another note, anyone noticed how much more expensive the Garrison Woods Safeway is compared to others in the city? As in around 20% more?
I ordered a medium blizzard at DQ the other day and she asked me for $6.08. I literally just starred at the girl with a blank expression for a few seconds before repeating that I just wanted one blizzard. Walked out without buying anything and went to McDonlads next door to pay $2 for the exact same thing.

A medium blizzard is quite big - most people can maybe eat half, and freeze the rest for later. The prices are on the board.

Wow. I feel like drinking water is akin to driving a "gas guzzling SUV" around here. It's water, guys. Nobody thinks there are super vitamins and minerals in the speshul bottle. It's simply a drink without flavour or sugar. But because I didn't want flavour or sugar, my beverage is an evil polluter but your bottle of pop is totally justified?
When the rest of you stop buying bottles of anything else to drink, I'll stop buying water. And no, I'm not going to keep "nalgenes" in my fridge so that every time I leave the house I've got water in case I get thirsty. Why? For the same reason I don't pack a sandwich. If I get hungry I'm going to hit a drive through or something. And when it comes to my coffee, I don't bring a reusable cup like I'm sure you guys do.

Don't worry, I make up for it. My work provides free drinks, including bottles of water, I go through 2-4 a day. I could refill them 3 feet from the fridge, but it isn't as cold and fresh tasting.
I'm jealous of all the super vitamins and minerals you're getting for free. I have to pay $1.19 each time I want my vitamins.

Tap water is for poor people... hehe
I always have a 24 pack of nestle in my trunk at all times.
Question should be, why pay for something that is :
a) tapwater;
b) available from your tap;
c) tastes like nothing.
Buy a big Nalgene bottle and fill it with water and keep it in your fridge. Or better yet, pick up free water bottles whenever they give away swag at tradeshows. Or if you really feel the need to pay for something in a bottle there are so many more interesting options that water.
