So I was named after a hockey player.
I had no idea until today, but I was named after a hockey player.
John Tanner, a goalie who had a cup of coffee with the Quebec Nordiques. Apparently, while my mom was pregnant with me, she was kind of stuck on the couch at the mercy of my hockey loving father. So she'd distract herself from the game she grew to hate by picking out names she liked. Apparently the name of a schlub goalie popped up on a broadcast long enough for her to consider it. How? Why? Of the 7 games he played before my birth and the countless other names she must have heard, she picked this guy to name me after? REALLY?
His Stats:

Anyway, is anyone else here named after a hockey player?

Well, my name is Robert, and I share a birthday with Bobby Orr.
That's as close as it gets though

John Tanner is your real father. Your mom was a puck bunny.

my wife and i were talking about kid names a while back and she asked me if there are any i liked...
she immediately nixed kipper, iggy and theo - jeeze!!!
then i came back with calvin gary
.... i think she was assuming 'calvin and hobbs' or something until i said, 'the kid would go by Cal'
there was a long pause, then she said.... Cal Gary.... "I DON'T THINK SO!!"

It could be worse. Like Monty Python says, always look on the bright side of life.
I assume I was named after an Irish Whisky fueled night.

I think a lot of people are named after someone significant, sometimes it is after a famous person and sometimes after a family member. I was named after a histroical figure myself and I know if I have a son I will name him after someone iimportant.
