^^^this,
I couldn't believe the morons in front of me taking up both lanes. Yeah the lanes are narrow, but deal with it and get in your lane. It was a clusterfeck this morning.

Very similar things happened on Southbound Deerfoot last year. It will take the first week or so for everyone to get used to how this works, then things will improve.
Blackfoot was a nightmare this morning.

Hardly any traffic this morning on my route, took me about 20 minutes from Springbank Hill to downtown.

What route did you take? That's way faster than I made it in from Springbank Hill.

69th St -> 34th Ave -> down through Sierra Morena to Richmond Road -> Crowchild -> 9th Ave.
Left my house around 7:45 and parked around 8:05. I work on the West end of downtown.

Traffic has been better on NB Deerfoot from the deep SE since they repainted the lines. My morning commute has gone down to 20 minutes average from 30.

Good to know!
I'd been wondering how long it'd take to get to the beltline, so that's a good starting point...
Though I haven't actually ridden a bike in about 15yrs... so probably add 50% for the first few times... heh.
Maybe I'll try it on a weekend that I need to come into the office.
What route do you take? - through fish creek until Macleod?

15-20 minutes to downtown from 50th & Macleod, depending on how you ride I guess.

Just a recent article (looks like some of these numbers are survey numbers - guessing they'd probably be at the lower end, given how badly people can underestimate their commutes versus reality):
http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...228/story.html
In the Calgary area, the average was 26 minutes and 16 per cent of commuters took 45 minutes or more to get to work.
Statistics Canada said about 82 per cent of commuters in the country travelled to work by car in 2010, while 12 per cent took public transit and six per cent walked or bicycled.

Since the move to Sunnyside my round trip commute is now 18.6km. About 10 minutes in the morning and around 15 on the way home.
My only complaint is that it is so quick to drive I barely have time to drink my latte.

I've only been driving due to just moving (using the car to take garbage, excess furniture to work to give away etc.). I've had the bike out a few times and should be riding to work again shortly.
I'm sure my reputation as a skyscraper enthusiast has the community association on guard for me trying to get involved. They probably figure I'll bring condo towers into the community! Bwahahaha!
Perhaps not towers, but definitely good mid-rise development along the LRT line.

You know, Sunnyside could really use a 100-150m residential/commercial tower. Get it done, Bigtime!

Haha, baby-steps. Point towers aren't the end all and be all of urban development. I would much sooner have a nice N-S line of well designed mid-rise buildings along the LRT corridor. Add that in with more dense development along 10th street (and 5th Ave north side) and you have a winner on your hands.

Of course, but you have to start big because you know that they're going to shoot anything down that's taller than 2 stories. Start at 150m, let them cut it in half!

That is a very good point, and we must remember to think of where the children will play.

Globe and Mail has an interesting article on the StatsCan results...
Quote:
In the six largest cities, the average commuting time was 44 minutes for public transit users and 27 minutes by car. The gap in average commuting time was slightly larger in mid-sized metropolitan areas — 46 minutes on public transit and 23 minutes by car.
|
It's always been my rule of thumb that it takes whichever is longer between 45 minutes or double whatever it takes to drive to get anywhere on transit.

Unless you work in an industrial area.
I can drive to work in about 20-25 minutes.
According to transit the same trip would take over 90 minutes.
