I work with someone who has two young kids. I get sick via proxy thanks to sharing an office space with their dad. So while we're putting pets down there, let's put the kids down there too. They can play with each other, it'll be brilliant. Let's make a children's play area in the cargo hold, that's perfect.

Its called making reasonable accomodations for people with allergies and disabilities. I don't care that precious doesnt shed, my dog goes in cargo when flying, so should yours.

Reasonable accomodations eh? So who wins in a battle of Sneezy VS Mr. Magoo?
The disabled person can be assisted by a crew member and/or an airport staff member. What alternative is there for the person with allergies, "Hey, just try not to breathe for a while, Victoria is a short flight"?

You're all missing the big picture here. This opens up a whole new opportunity for Pet Planes, the airline that flies your pet to meet up at your destination. Stupid people will pay for anything.

Why are we arguing rare situations? The person with allergies can be moved around the plane so they are far from a service dog. How often do you even see a service dog in public let alone on a flight?

So move the person with allergies to another seat and let someone's pet dog sit up front with its owner. Problem solved and the dog doesn't need to go into the cargo area.

Unless you're moving across the country and never returning, why would you travel with a pet in the first place?
Flying is an annoying and stressful experience for people who understand what's going on, I can't imagine what it's like for an animal that doesn't have a clue what's happening.

Airplanes recycle the air you breathe. Once the dander is in the air it gets recycled to all parts of the plane.

I figured this was the angle you were vying for. Unfortunately your dog shouldnt be afforded the same rights as a service animal. Besides, why do we discriminate against larger dogs that can't fit under the seat, instead we allow the rodents in the cabin since they're small.

Exactly. If gigantic people should be allowed to take up two seats, gigantic dogs should be granted one.

Dogs aren't covered under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Gigantors are though.

I'm one of those strugglers that without modern science wouldn't have made it past age 5 due to allergies. Like most things in life, there should be a balance and reasonableness here. For example, I'm deathly allergic to ####### peanuts but I wouldn't make an entire cafeteria re-arrange their lunch plans because of me, since I'm essentially the one with the problem- not the kid with the peanut butter sandwich. But get ready because I'm about to get unreasonable.
All you knobgobblers that think your animal (read: animal, as in, not human) is a person and deserves a seat, fresh coffee and cinema entertainment on its flight can kiss my ass. There is absolutely no need for an animal to be hanging out in an air-tight container when the problem can be ever so easily solved by putting the pet in cargo, where it will probably actually be safer anyway. It is a dog/cat/chicken/pig for god sakes. Were you going to have a conversation with the thing? Pet it all 5 hours to Toronto? What need did you have filled with the pet beside you?
Saying "don't like it, don't fly" is just about as ignorant /reasonable as me walking into that cafeteria and demanding everybody else stop bringing peanut butter sandwhiches. My dad flies a lot for business... I can't tell you how many flights his eyes are swollen shut because somebody needed a cat onboard. A cat. One of the most solitary creatures to roam the planet. The damn thing probably WANTS to be alone in cargo.
Honestly. Yes allergic people are a lower lifeform, but too bad, we still rest slightly above pets on the totem poll, much to your chagrin.

It's usually a 50/50 recycled/fresh air mix.

Well, as the owner of three dogs, I say...why the hell would anyone want their dog on their lap on an airplane? Or even in a kennel under the seat? I'd rather be trying to sleep than trying to make sure my dog isn't getting freaked out by the food cart or turbulence. They can all go in the cargo bay as far as I'm concerned. As for the allergies of my fellow passengers, I have a couple of friends with pet allergies. I sympathize.

I'd bet most of you people who are bitching and moaning and wanting animals off flights are NOT animal owners yourself.
We can play the game though, if that's what everyone wants. I expect NO ONE on my next flight to smell of cigarette smoke, perfume, bad breath, body odour, food of any kind should also be banned because of the stench. I have asthma and so I demand my rights to not have to use my puffer are more important than everyone else.
So... Yes I have a dog. I may have a rat of a dog, but it is my pet. She is a part of my family.
My animals safety, should I need to travel with her, far far far outweighs my care of you allergy people having a sniffle or two. If you have a problem, one of us can move. If you have an issue that will cause you LIFELONG effects from one airplane ride with an animal in a confined space where the air doesn't even circulate, I really think you ought to re-examine why YOU are travelling too. And if you really do have a lifelong health issue due to my pet being in the cabin, I would consider switching flights, just so long as you would also have considered it to avoid my animal.
I'm not entirely unreasonable- I just wonder why today's culture panders to allergy sufferers. A lot of people's pet are the most important thing to them. I know that in my case, my house could burn down and I would not care one iota as long as my dog was safe.
P.S. I've only travelled on a plane where there has been an animal in the cabin one time. It was my own dog, and no one on the plane even knew she was there, allergy sufferers included. That said, I would never ever travel with her again because it was such a pain in the behind.
Anyway, if you ban pets you better ban EVERY other airbourne toxin/allergen/etc... that's only fair.
edit: I also have friends with severe allergies, and they make sure to take a pill, even though they've never had a reaction to my dog. It's a hassle, but that's all part of life.

Because people are more important than animals.

Not really. It is a pressure vessel with a constant inflow of air. With a constant inflow of air and no outflow, the fuselage would overpressurize. So there is an outflow valve installed. The air is constantly being exchanged.
I used to do air ambulance flying, often with diseased people onboard. The outflow valve is installed in the back of the airplane so there is a general "front to back" movement of the air entering the cabin. It was nice to know that gross sick people germs generally wouldn't make it to the front of the plane. It was also childishly fun to rip a fart and then wait 5-10 seconds for the medic in the back to smell it.
