Oilsands/Keystone Pipeline Protests in Washington D.C.
Two weeks of sit-in protests against, among other things, the Canadian oilsands and the TransCanada Corp's Keystone pipeline to Texas, are about to kick off in Washington D.C.
Quote:
With the U.S. State Department expected to release within days its final environmental analysis of TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline, environmentalists are cranking up their protest efforts by employing Hollywood star power while descending upon Washington to stage White House sit-ins.
Mark Ruffalo, the Oscar-nominated actor, is the latest Hollywood figure to get involved in organized opposition to Alberta's oilsands, asking people to participate in the sit-ins that begin on Saturday and continue to Sept. 3.
Organizers say some 1,500 people have signed up to participate in the protests.

I didn't either. I saw "Zodiac" and said, hey this unknown guy is great. My wife pointed out that he's been in a few chick-flicks/intelligent dramas and women love him.
Which would explain why you and I have no clue who he is.

Had an idea!

So protesting against a resource that they need, and jobs that they need even more.
Great job there guys. Must be nice to live in cushy Hollywood and be able to spend your time protesting in DC while the rest of the country is desperately trying to find jobs.

I wonder what Obama will do in response. It looks like he has been trying to shore up his base as he goes into reelection mode. He just had immigration stop deporting illegal aliens all together. This should help retain hispanic votes. The black caucus is also demanding a bone thrown their way which I suspect might be seen in Obama's new proposed stimulus plan in September. The plan won't pass but, it probably be will be enough of an effort to retain black votes.
Obama will need the environmental movement on side come election time. He should get their votes by default because environmentalists know their voice would shrink under any Republican president but, Obama needs more than that; He needs people on the ground willing to knock on doors and give him money.

Tim Robbins: Let me explain to you how this works: you see, the corporations finance Team America, and then Team America goes out... and the corporations sit there in their... in their corporation buildings, and... and, and see, they're all corporation-y... and they make money.

The inside word is that they have to / will approve it. Just a matter of time.
I'm actually working on the project right now in Indiana...
And out by Oyen there are acres of pipe just waiting to be put in the ground.

Whatever - it would be in our best interest to pipeline crude and gas out to Kitimat and sell it on the world market anyway. Why do we have to continue to discount it to the US?

Yup, crude that goes to the Gulf is only sold to the US. You nailed it on the head

Because BC will not allow a pipeline to run to the coast so we can sell it to the Chinese.

Ha, serious? I'd explain in much more detail but I can't (legally). Take a look at crude differentials (Brent in particular) and you'll see. In generalized terms, the US Gulf is a huge refining hub because it all gets shipped internationally from there.

Is Canada getting Brent prices for exports to the US? I suspect we'd get a healthy premium for the oilsands blend if it was shipped off the west coast.

No, in plain terms we're getting junky WTI-like prices when we could be getting delicious Gulf prices. The Midwest is oversupplied to the Nth degree, Cushing needs no more Canadian Crude. Hence why the XL project is so darned important.
