I hate the Jays closers.

In other news, I am loving their future..........recent acquisitions like Rasmus and Lawrie make me think this team is only a couple years away (and a nice free agent signing or two) from being quite good. Really, really excited to watch what happens.

Crappy ending but fun game, felt like safeco was half jays fans tonight. Also for you eastbound fans, brandon league's intro video is a full on stevie janowski production complete with blue flames framing him on the video board while he pitches, really top notch stuff.

Never been this excited about the Jays, not since 93 when I was 8 and was excited about everything.

Beede was the only 1st round choice not to sign yesterday.

"They were still far off," Beede told the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. "They ended up getting to $2.5 million, but that still wasn't what we valued the Vanderbilt education at.

------------

What idiot helped them value a Vanderbilt education? Maybe it is worth 2.5 million over a life time but he can't get these next three years back. I do not hope he has a major injury or anything but as I just read somewhere. A pitchers career can end on the next pitch. Such a bad decision.

I read another article that suggested he sat down with his Grandfather and came to that conclusion.

I wonder if they looked at the value of an MLB contract for a star pitcher..."if he made it"...and what value that would add to his life.

Tons of fun yesterday at the game, never get tired of going to Safeco.

The Jays closers are so bad it's laughable. With two competent relief guys this team would have 10 more wins. Seeing Lawrie go yard was awesome.

Well, Beede stuck to his guns and I guess you have to admire that. He and his family obviously put a big value on an education and I'm sure he feels he made the right decision. Good luck kid.

I've never understood an athlete turning down $2.5 million in guaranteed dollars in order to get an education, if you have $2.5 million you can pay to go to any school you want.

Take the money, and then if your arm craps out you can use that money to pay for your own Vanderbilt education while having an extra $2 million dollars in your pocket.

yep, personally it sounds like Beede and his agent were "greedy".

Basically demanding a huge bonus ($3.5m). Banking that when he is drafted again he will be a higher selection (lots of risk..... system could change).

This decision is going to turn out badly in my opinion.

"The Toronto Blue Jays placed Jon Rauch on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after the right-handed reliever underwent an appendectomy in Seattle.

The Blue Jays also designated left-hander Trever Miller for assignment and picked up the contracts of left-handers Wil Ledezma and Rommie Lewis from triple-A Las Vegas."

I dont' think this is necessarily all about money. Remember, Beede and his agent put out a presser prior to the draft informing all teams that he had signed a letter of intent and that he should probably not be drafted becuase he fully intended on going to Vandy.
I think they probably looked at it that they will probably always have a good shot to get something in the 2 mill range so why not by pass the extra mill and go get the education he wants and come back and still be worth the 2 mill the Jays were offering. an extra mill may have changed his mind, but i'm not sure how greedy they are being given that they pre warned teams that he was going to be a very tough sign. Jays took a risk and unfortunately didn't pan out but at the same time they got it back with the Norris signing. No way should Norris have been there in the 2nd round and IMO is a better prospect than Beede anyway.

For sure it was, or why hard line with 3.5m. This guy is banking on going higher in the draft (getting a higher bonus)

Agents tell teams all of the time they have signed a commit letter, basically means they will sign but they are expensive.

Norris, was thought to be a tougher sign.... for the exact reason.

Beede is going after the cash, I remember another Jays draft pick that did the same thing and he blew out his arm....

From the limited time I saw of Miller last night this certainly is not unexpected, he was throwing mid 70s stuff and got knocked around a lot.

Correct - but after watching Henderson Alvarez last night, that guy has an electric arm. Needs some season to be sure, but the movement on all of his pitches sure has me excited. Guy can pump ched for sure.
