My issue with Dr. Bernstein's is that it is so cost prohibitive, that most people get out once they have lost the weight. And once they are out and on their own, they go back to their old habits. I would absolutely love to see what percentage of Dr. Berstein patients have maintained their weight loss 5 years after hitting their goal. I have met 6 people that met goal via the Dr. and 5 of them have regained at least half of what they lost. Maybe it's a coincidence.

As for Herbal Magic, they do have anecdotal success stories, but I think you hit the nail on the head. They say "take our herbs, eat right and exercise and you will lose weight". Well, I could tell you to "lick toads, eat right and exercise and you will lose weight". And when you lose weight I could say "See, I told you licking those toads works wonders!!!"

Losing weight isn't easy, but the process itself is pretty damn simple.

Interesting. . . . Could I buy some of these toads from you?

I read this thread earlier. Well done to a bunch of you that have lost weight, and well done to those of you who may have tried and haven't found success just yet! Keep at it and it will come! I'd also like to lose about 10 lbs. I'll start a more solid effort on my fitness/athletics today and see how it goes. Maybe posting in this thread will be inspirational!

a quick update....

I decided to take the summer off from the gym and just be active outdoors.

over the weekend, I decided to stop by the gym and weigh myself which I hadnt done in about a month.

I am pleased to report that I have obtained and actually passed through my desired goal weight. I weighed in at 192.6 lbs. which gives me a total weight loss of 82.4lbs.

According to the powers that be (BMI), I am still considered over weight but meh, who cares. At 47, 6ft tall, 192.6, I'll take it. In total I have dropped 6 pant sizes and my shirts have gone from a XXXL to an L. I think I can live with being a tad over weight.

My goal now is to maintain.

I really enjoy this thread and continued success to those still working on their goals.

I've found the BMI and ideal weight calculators almost seem to put you underweight. At 5' 7.5" I am supposed to be about 145-150 lbs. I'm aiming for 180, and I'm 20 pounds away.

My bro-in-law just lost 30 lbs working this month in Afghanistan, in the 50 + C heat.

well according to the calculators, I am suppose to be 148-184.
184 I can maybe see happening but to be quite honest, I am comfortable now.
I'm not gonna worry about it at all.

I stepped on the scale after my workout today. Clocked in at 179 for the first time since high school. 4 lbs to go before reaching what I set out to do in February. I forgot to even consider the cost of basically buying a new wardrobe, save a few M size shirts and 32 waist pants I have left over from 7 years ago. Nevermind suits. Not complaining, but it does put a dent in savings.

I think what Devil's Advocate is trying to say about diets is that for the most part yes diet's will help you lose weight temporarily, but what you really need to lose weight permanently isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle change.

Sure you can lose 30 lbs on weightwatchers, but at the end of the day they haven't taught you a darn thing about eating properly other than to buy their meals. And when people get off the diet, they usually go back to their old ways, and once the weight is back they either go back to the diet folks (to spend more money) or they give up.

I've quietly plugged my way down to 190 over the last few years from a peak of 230 (after a health destroying 10 day Florida Flames road trip with BBS & Co. in December followed up with Christmas feasting).

The funny thing is I bet most of my friends wouldn't even know it. Being 6'7" does definitely help hide the weight, and I wasn't aware I had even put on that much until I stepped on the scale for the first time in years. I'm assuming dropping 40 pounds of fat is probably better for my overall health, and I must say just cleaning up my diet a bit has made it so I hardly ever get sick now.

According to BMI I could be as low as 164. That would be pretty hilarious to see....

I'm sort of wondering if I even can lose anymore weight at this point. I'm 5'8" and pretty much fluctuate between 165-170 lbs. I exercise 5 days/week and eat pretty healthy, but I seem to be gaining or staying at the same weight for the most part. I wear size S shirts and have a waist size that ranges somewhere between 30-32, so is this possibly just added muscle mass while staying mostly lean? I don't feel like I'm overweight or anything but my BMI puts me in the just barely overweight category. I thought it might be good to get down to the 155-160 range but it just doesn't seem to be happening.

the BMI doesn't do a good job of taking muscle into account. I'm 5'6" and it says I should be closer to 148. I'm not slim, but I am not huge and haven't seen that figure in 25 years.

Yeah, BMI isn't a really great indicator.

To illustrate, probably the fittest dude I know is the same height as me and weighs ~220 lbs. About 4 months ago I weighed the same as him, and according to BMI we were both obease. I have now gotten down to ~195 lbs, so my BMI is much lower than his, but he is by a fairly wide margin in much better shape than me.

I'm going to start trying to lose weight as well. I'm 5'6 and 185 pounds. My goal is to be 160.

I'm 26 and between the ages of 15-23 I've always been 130-140 pounds. I don't want to be that skinny again, but I think losing 25 pounds would make me feel much better and I'd probably have a lot more energy. I eat a lot of fast food and junk food so from today I am going to try and quit the junk food and get regular exercise. As I type this I'm chewing down on Baklava so it's not going to be easy!

I've been quietly trying to lose weight for a while now, the first 10 pounds came off easy but I haven't been able to get rid of more yet (the last month or so). I think the hard part is deciding how important it is to you vs big life changes. I eat a lot less and a lot healthier now, but I still drink a fair amount (much more than I would have guessed before this). I could give up drinking totally and probably go down pretty easily, but I think I'm going to stick it out and try to still actually live my life and keep going down albeit much more slowly.

Anyone with massive weight loss in a condensed period worry about excess skin? I had a huge hanging belly, and although it has receded quite a bit I'm worried it won't tuck back in over time (I never expected it to go away completely without surgery). I also have some loose skin on my thighs.

Do you do weights? You can't just lose weight, you need to build lean muscle, otherwise your just going to hang.

3 days a week. As for the hanging belly, no amount of muscle will replace the fat or fill in the sack.
