I'm just basically saying the justice system seems to be flawed. People seem to get off to easy for stuff that is terrible. I hope they find this guy and do the right thing and throw his a$$ in jail. If they don't then this world is as bad as i thought.

They did find the guy and he is in custody, as per the second post.

That's an issue with the legal/justice system (courts etc.) not the police. In most cases, the police do a great job at arresting the proper suspects. It's when it's out of their hands and past to the courts it often falls apart.

The only say police have in the justice system is basically showing up to court to testify against the criminal. The police are just as frustrated with the catch and release Canadian justice system as anyone. Actually I'd say they are more frustrated than anyone since they put in hard time and risk their lives everyday only to deal with the same criminal a few days later.

If you are referring to conviction rates, I am fairly sure once arrested most people plead guilty fairly quickly in a plea. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head though.
If you are referring to the severity of punishment, the reality is that it falls apart much before the courts even see the case. The reason we really couldn't lock people up longer for crimes is heavily influenced by the extreme costs involved with that detention. I made a post here a year ago that gave some rough numbers on how it would drastically increase our taxes, but I cant find it now.
Combine that with the historical stats that show heavier punishments/more punishments involving jail time, don't serve to deter crime, and actually will turn more people into hardened criminals and actually increase it a bit.

Nothing really new to add then what has been so far but how the eff do you slash a cute innocent baby? That is horrific. People say vengeance isn't moral well eff that bs. Throw this guy in jail with murderers for a week. Then throw his a** in the electric chair. I am totally for the death penalty in the right circumstances......this is one of them. I can't imagine how someone would do this to a 6 month old. Words can't even describe how heinous this is.

Calls like these can be career enders in the Police, Fire and EMS field. I hope to never ever come across an incident like this. Wow, just unbelievable.

Back in the 90's there was that triple axe murder in Bonavista. It was a career ender for a few CPS involved. The scary thing was that Ian Gordon was tutoring kids at my neice and nephews school, and nobody, saw it coming. Dude just snapped.
I still cannot believe someone bought the house shortly after. The thing should have been demolished, and truned into a memorial garden or something. Especially where it is located, it would not have looked odd or out of place if they had. I heard the neighbours on either side, 2 deep, all sold their homes, yet some dude just snapped the thing up because it was a deal. I am not religious, but knowing the evil that home saw, would be too much. Even when I drive by that house it gives me the chills.
Here is a link regarding what one detective is still going through, sad stuff.

And the guy was charged...and a little more clarification to the original call...
Quote:
At approximately 4:15 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, officers responded to a 911 call in the 1000 block of Cranston Drive S.E.
When officers arrived they quickly made entry into the home and arrested an agitated man who had slashed an 11-month-old boy several times. After securing the man’s arrest, officers then provided critical First Aid to the baby, who had suffered serious wounds. The child was then transported by EMS to a local hospital in critical condition. The child is now stable and his condition is improving. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Officers have since spoken to the child’s mother and have determined she was not at home at the time of the incident. The accused in this case is the child's father.
The identity of the accused, who is charged with one count of attempted murder, is being withheld to protect the identity of the child. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at 9 a.m.

Not to be rude, but were you perhaps drunk when you read this story? The story is about a baby being slashed, police showing up and apprehending the father.
But your response is about how slow police are to respond to crimes (there was no mention of critisism over police response time), then when questioned about that, you go on to say you hope they find the guy....the guy that they found when they showed up at the house.

I have had to call the cops to my house in Calgary a few times and each time they were there within 5 minutes. Wickedly fast each time. Although there is a police station near by, I'm sure that the cars they send are just out on regular patrol. I'm quite impressed with CPS response time.

Or just a sick thing to happen regardless of who the person was. Who cares who was responsible, white, black, immigrants, white trash it's just a tragic event and something tells me you'd just love if it was a brown person so you could go on and on about how immigrants can't adjust to Canada blah blah blah.

When I heard it was an 11-month-old baby boy, my heart sank because I have an 11-month-old baby boy. It's tremendously upsetting to think of anyone harming such a little innocent little guy, much less the dad, whose first instinct should be to protect his son at all costs.
It seems like the dad called the police on himself and gave himself up right away, so it's a good thing he came to his senses in time to save the baby. Sounds like it might be a mental illness issue.

Sounds like he's already setting up his defense...
The male was suppose to have his first court date this morning but I see it got adjourned for 30 days for the male to be assessed by a psychiatrist.

They said on the Global Evening News that alcohol/drugs were not a factor. The whole "sane" issue is kind of an odd thing too...cause obviously no sane person would ever slash up their kid.

Why? I just understand what would motivate someone to do this. What is there to gain?

Sadly and oddly enough it is more expensive to punish a convict via capital punishment than life in prison. However, I still say we should bring back the death penalty.
The cost for judicial process for capital cases is extremely high.
