Thinking of going to the gym but im scared.
Ive always been a scrawny weakling my whole life (6', 170lbs, most of that weight in the belly area) plus I have always had social anxiety issues. Want to do something about it but Im afraid of the muscleheads openly mocking my ability to barely benchlift just the bar. I dont know if I can take that without breakinv out in tears on the spot and further embarrassing myself. Will I get mocked? Are people generally pretty vicious at gyms?

Nobody cares, this isn't an 80's movie, people are too busy with their workouts to care about your own.
Just go.

Depends on the gym, but I've never noticed any mocking at any gym I've been at. I you're going to someplace like Golds or World Health, they're all filled with people just like you

I'm not sure which gyms you've been to in the past but I've never seen anyone get mocked based on what they lift. I've been going to gyms regularly for the last 10 years and I can't think of a single instance of this.
Don't forget everyone has to start off somewhere. If all you can do is the bar then do the bar and work your way up. It may look dumb but you're doing what you can. When I first started out I couldn't even do the bar and I had to use the curl bars for bench press.

Or you use one of the bench machines since nobody notices the amount of weight that you do on it.

Just do it! You might be surprised by the muscle heads willing to help you out if you ask. Everyone there is after a common goal of getting fitter. No one will mock you for that.

Just slap on some headphones and get down to business. Really, nobody who is worth their bones cares.

This is pretty much it. People are there to work on their own bodies, not worry about yours. Those fitness guys love to pass on tidbits of knowledge and recommendations as well.
Go and just worry about yourself and have fun.

The gym I go to when I'm down in Phoenix has every age group, fitness level, etc, imaginable. Believe me, no one is going to mock you at one of these places. Just do it - you'll feel comfortable there in no time.

Let me guess, a sociology student doing some kind of a ######ed study into online community? Or a bored sad person (not that there is a difference between these two)? Why else would you bait people to respon to assinine threads?

They can, but when someone is faking a disability do you walk up, smack them and say "Stop faking you dumb prick?" No. On the offchance they actually are handicapped.

Don't get too big, then you won't be able to sit on the same side of the booth as your boyfriend.

This needs to be said - I think you'll find that the pop at a gym will be even more expensive than at a liquor store...

To start, stop drinking so much pop, that will immediately help with your belly.
BONUS - the money you save on pop, especially that costly superstore liquor store stuff, can go towards a personal trainer.
