These are major problems with a disenfranchised youth that also has a strong sense of entitlement. There is immense disrespect shown by these young people. England has been on a downward spiral, socially, for decades. Probably the main reason we chose to emigrate. I am sorry for my friends that are still living there and some of the footage of the riots has brought me to tears. Makes me all the more grateful for Canada and its wonderful, polite people.

"The quote is commonly attributed to Socrates, but apparently there is
no conclusive evidence that he actually said it. The Library of
Congress notes that this quote is "attributed to Socrates by Plato"...

The quote may have come from Plato's Republic Book 4, where Socrates
is quoted saying the following regarding things that he thinks have
been neglected: "I mean such things as these: ? when the young are to
be silent before their elders; how they are to show respect to them by
standing and making them sit; what honour is due to parents; what
garments or shoes are to be worn; the mode of dressing the hair;
deportment and manners in general. You would agree with me? ? Yes."

The Greek philosopher Plato studied under Socrates. Plato complained
about the youth of the day, also. "What is happening to our young
people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They
ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions.
Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?"

We're agreed then, a lizard person said it, or perhaps a reverse vampire.

In all seriousness though it is awesome to see people stand up and try and stop the rioting, of course there will be some argument on whether this is the best course of action or if it just magnifies the issues, but it is still nice to see people take responsibility to try and help the community.

Actually those terrorist #######s, the muslims were well to the fore of protecting their neighbourhoods by all accounts, they organized themselves out of the local mosques and then patroled the streets.

Plato's Socratic dialogues are works of fiction. It's intellectually misleading when people attribute quotes from the Republic or the other works as being the actual spoken words of the historical figures contained therein (I'm not saying that about you, just whoever it was that originally created that quote!) Socrates never created literature, and we have no actual quotations of his. In fact, we don't really even know much of anything about him outside of the works of Plato and maybe Xenophon. Besides that, that quote is still nothing contained inside Plato's works, even if it is slightly contextually similar in a few cases.

It's not really important, but I figure if Plato valued the truth above almost anything else, it's fair to point out an inaccuracy in a Socrates quote. They seem to be some of the most common when quoting Plato's works and attributing them to others.

My colleague Vikram Dodd writes about the Independent Police Complaints Commission's initial ballistics results on the shooting of Mark Duggan, which triggered Saturday's initial riots in Tottenham.

The results show:

• The bullet lodged in the police radio is a "jacketed round". This is a police issue bullet and, while it is still subject to DNA analysis, it is consistent with having been fired from a Metropolitan police Heckler and Koch MP5 submachine gun.

• The firearm found at the scene was a converted BBM "Bruni" self-loading pistol. This is not a replica; the scientist considers it to be a firearm for the purposes of the Firearms Act and a prohibited weapon and is therefore illegal.

• The handgun was found to have a "bulleted cartridge" in the magazine, which is being subject to further tests.

• At this stage there is no evidence that the handgun found at the scene was fired during the incident. The FSS has told the IPCC that it may not be possible to say for certain; however further tests are being carried out in an attempt to establish this.
