I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm going to say don't do it!

If you want to speed up your computer, your options are:
1 - Disable automatic startup for certain programs you may not need.
2 - BACK UP and reformat.
3 - Overclock, at your own risk. Only possible with the right hardware.
4 - Upgrade.

Stuff like that usually has spyware and loads crap up on your computer. Avoid!

Think about storing all the photos/important stuff on an external drive, then reformat the old one. Maybe add more RAM?

I think double my speed just gets rid of spyware / malware.

Generally, anything that claims to double your speed by getting rid of spyware / malware is itself spyware / malware (or a rip-off).

There are a lot of other 'free' programs that will do a much better job.

MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
CCleaner
Microsoft Security Essentials

Couple others that have come out in the last year that are really popular but I can't recall them off the top of my head.

If your computer is clean and it still runs slow, you might have to upgrade it.

If your kids computer is running slow, chances are you could get improved performance by 'cleaning' it up and ensuring it is cleaned of all viruses and malware, however, you could get the same results (actually better) if you were able to just completely reinstalling the OS.

Depending on the machine, you could do some pretty cheap upgrades to make it more viable - check Ricosuave's thread in Buy and Sell for some RAM upgrades (often the cheapest and easiest to do). If you could post some specs on the machine here, I am sure someone could easily point out the right parts to get and how to install them.

CCleaner and Ad-aware are good. There are lots of remnants of old programs long since uninstalled that will eat up resources.

I have seen those commercials like Finallyfast or whatever, they are at best charging for what is already free, and at worst scamming you and installing some nefarious programs on your machine.

*** Stay away from this crap ***

Doublemyspeed and others like this are all scams. Every one of them. They go by many names, but all are the same.

Many go and install CyberDefender, an infamous scamming and virusing software. They are a well-known outfit, including to the US Dept. of Justice. They thoroughly install your system with spyware, adware and assorted other viruses, and do nothing for your PC. Your PC and data will then be held ransom.

They have had lawsuits launched against them, and settled out of court.

Never, ever pay money or use these services.

Here is a thread with further links.

Here is another site with similar info as above.

You can continue to google for cyberdefender scam if you want more info.

Don't bother with it.

Back up any important data on the PC (use the Windows Easy Transfer tool if you're running Windows 7) and format/reinstall the OS.

Any "computer that the kids use" will be notorious for slowing to a crawl because of all the crap they install on it. That's just the way it is, sadly.

Anything of that nature is fake/crap/scam/dangerous/useless. Don't buy into the hype.

If you want to speed up your kid's desktop, find your average 20-35 year old that knows about computers and they can usually fix it. I can't offer you any actual advice without more information. I would start off by killing all the unnecessary processes that come up at start-up.

Agreed. Stay far, far away from these guys.

They will load your computer with spyware and find ways to make you hurt that would make Genghis Khan proud.
