Anyone ever been to Patagonia?
A somewhat impromptu idea, I'm thinking about going to Patagonia over Christmas to do some outdoorsy stuff. Anyone ever been, notably over Christmas, and can tell me anything I need to know? Patagonia seems pretty bad ass, but scary as eff too.

Full of Welsh immigrants apparently, deffinatly an interesting place, I would give Buenos Aries a few days if you are flying in through there though, one of the few places I intend to see before I die, Kashmir and Armenia looking less likely by the day .

I've been down to Ushuaia as part of a trip to Antarctica. It's a pretty cool place, and the mountains look absolutely incredible down there. Ushuaia itself kind of felt like Banff, lots of high end outdoor equipment stores and tourists from all over.

Cool, I remember going through that album. Did you get a chance to do any, for lack of a better word, extreme sports?

Nope, we were only in Ushuaia for a day before heading out on the ship to Antarctica.

Their pizza is decent, if not overrated a little.
That jalapeno ranch dipping sauce is great though.

I've wanted to do a trip here for a very long time but the planets have not aligned to make it happen as of yet. I've had visions of hiking around El Chalten for a week or so, checking out Torres del Paine, getting to Tierra del Fuego etc. Maybe I'll get there next year when I have more vacation time.

Patagonia is one of those places that sounds like it's the name of a kingdom in some fantasy novel that you can only reach via some kind of magical portal.

You trad, and want to trad there?
I'd like to do some of that stuff (among others), but I don't want to be the guy with the most experience and make the headlines as another dumb inexperience guy who overestimated him/herself.

Just met a guy from Buenos Aires in Barbados a couples weeks ago. He said Patagonia is a must go to if you in Argentina. He talked pretty highly about it.

A friend of mine went on a big mountain biking trip there last year and had a blast, although most of his stories seem to be about the part of his trip when he was in Chile.

Did he mention any near-epic's he had?
Patagonia does seem like some fantasy novel to me, thats for sure. I never really considered going in the near future cause I feel like I don't have enough experience or the mental game for it yet. I was hoping to get that experience and mental confidence nearby before testing my life in Patagonia.

To be honest, I'm a trad noob and I'm definitely not willing to learn in a place like Patagonia. I also don't want to be a casualty who overestimated himself.

Patagonia is amazing! We went in April '09 (their fall season).
Hopefully El Chalten is still fairly inaccessible and not developed with high-rise hotels by now.
