Our murder rate this year is sort of an aberration, but Edmonton is always among the leader in murders within Canada. Don't really know why it keeps happening this year, but I try not to be out in some communities at night.

Oh and Mandel is a jackass, surprised he isn't blaming the construction, heat, or mosquito's. Whatever it takes to bring up an excuse, eh Steve?
Why don't you want to name them? It's not racist if it's true. Somolians are a big reason for the murder rate in Edmonton.

And they are a huge problem in my area of Forest Lawn too with stabbings and parties at community halls that end in the wee hours of the morning with many fights and cops being called to basically every single one. the Canadian Government brought them over from war and oppression only for them to terorrize each other in Canada, the place where they are supposed to be safe.

Canada should have a zero policy for people they do a favor for. Deport their asses if they get into any trouble.

I don't want to call them out by name mostly because when you bring up the topic of Somalian's in Edmonton, people just start call you a racist, and you have no idea about their struggles and blah blah blah.

Of course it's true, but when you start blaming s specific culture by name, people can't wait to start calling you a racist. It only gets worse that I live in the only NDP riding in Alberta (Strathcona), where the last thing you want to do is challenge a bunch of free thinking arrogant radicals.

I was actually looking to move into the main home of most of the Somalians in Edmonton (on Boyle St), but the night I was there looking at condo's a Somali was gunned down just down the road. Of course I decided to avoid that neighborhood as a result.

The politicians and Somali leaders keep talking big about how they are dealing with the issue, but it is pretty damn prevalent that they are really doing nothing to change their ways.

It's pretty bad though, someone blew up a retirement home! Where else in Canada would you ever see that? Sicking really.

Just a pet peeve of mine, but isn't it incorrect for people to call you racist for saying it's Somalians? Somalia is a country, not a race. If anything, it's xenophobic or ethnocentric.

Wasn't there a documentary not too long ago about how something like 50 somalis have been murdered over the past few years in Northern Alberta?

Yeah I remember watching it, I think it was on CBC. I'm not sure about 50, but they are killing each other off in pretty big numbers.

I remember seeing that too. I think it was on Global since I don't watch CBC outside of sports.

Edmonton and Disneyland should never ever ever be used in the same sentence let alone be compared to each other.

What are the murder numbers for Calgary? It seems like we've been having an awesome year!

This is what I came up with but they're totally unofficial.

Calgary:

2003: 10
2004: 16
2005: 24
2006: 26
2007: 30
2008: 32
2009: 25
2010: 14
2011: 3 (2 of those in the first 4 days)

Edmonton:

2003:
2004: 28
2005: 39
2006: 36
2007: 33
2008: 35
2009: 27
2010: 27
2011: 33

Looks like Edmonton is just doing what they have always done - killing each other.

A worse economy will make crime rates go up. As well, Edmonton's location may add to the increase of shaddy characters.

But that's a large jump to go from Calgary's handful of murders to Edmonton's 33. The fact of the matter is Edmonton has always had a higher murder rate. I think part of the reason is a more blue collar city. I'm sure there are other factors. The frustration over the Oilers for instance.

SantA?

I've always wondered about that dude... Lives up north with a bunch of midgets and livestock... Very shady indeed.

You know what would totally solve Edmonton's problems? A thriving downtown arena district built with public funds.

I think the best solution to the whole murder thing would be to nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

so Edmonton has the smaller population but consistently year after year they have the higher murder rate. the Edmonton politicians can spin it however they want, that's just ugly

It might be higher this year but Edmonton has always had a very high murder rate than other cities since as long back as I can remember.
