wranglers D Gord Baldwin signs in Czech Republic

No longer a Flames prospect, he has found a home in Czech. Found out per Elite Prospects:
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=11670

He'll be joining MK Blada Boleslav. Looking at their roster, they have former Blue Jacket and World Championship vet David Vyborny and former Hitmen and Radim's brother, David Vrbata

All the best to him

Baldwin was the Flames' last remaining asset from the Zalapski/Bure trade that I still remember so well to this day.

In the briefest of nutshells, the Flames traded Zalapski --> Bure --> Niedermayer --> Commodore --> Baldwin.

I believe Commodore walked and Baldwin was drafted with the Flames' regular draft pick in the third round of the 2005 draft (after Matt Pelech).

From Hockey-Reference.com:

Mike Commodore
Traded to Carolina by Calgary for Atlanta's 3rd round choice (previously acquired, Calgary selected Gord Baldwin) in 2005 Entry Draft, July 29, 2005.

Good call, Icarus!

I still remember the big trade in March '94 when we acquired Patrick/Nylander/Zalapski from Hartford for Ranheim/Suter/Drury

Here's the CP thread on the trade! http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=13496

Here's some trivia for the weekend... which two current Flames players can still be partly traced back through trade history to the Patrick/Nylander/Zalapski for Ranheim/Suter/Drury trade?

Wow had to do a little research
Nylander > Nazarov (from TB) > Leopold (from ANA) > Tanguay (from COL) > MTL's First Round Choice (GREG NEMISZ)

Nemisz and Tanguay (indrectly)??

Close to the answer I was looking for. Nemisz is right, not Tanguay however as he is not currently a Flame a result of trade but rather by free agency.

To determine the other player you have to look at the other draft pick that was acquired along with the Nemisz pick. It was a 2nd rounder in 2009 which the Flames packaged up with Lawrence Nycolat and Ryan Wilson to reacquire Jordan Leopold. Leo was packaged with a 3rd in '09 to acquire the rights to Jay Bouwmeester, who Calgary signed prior to him becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Thus we can trace a part of Nemisz and Bouwmeester back to Ranheim/Suter/Drury.

In fact, the draft pick which was used to select Paul Ranheim can be traced back even further to Ken Houston who was drafted with the Flames' own pick in 1973--this makes Nemisz and Bouwmeester the two current Flames players whose history with the club can be partly traced back through trades the furthest! Only Jarome Iginla comes as close, being traceable as he is back to the Kent Nilsson selection in 1976.

Although you could argue that the reason we signed Tanguay is because of the first time around. Would we have gotten him at that price, or even at all, if it weren't for the years he played here as a result of that trade?

You're absolutely right, Tanguay may not be a Flame now if it wasn't for the first trade that brought him here but I suppose it's just speculation and you have to draw the line somewhere!
