Yeah definitely a possibility of a marketing stunt. What are the odds that two women who look like that would move into a house you had set up like that.
Presumably the guy would have screened out the people looking to move in there and chosen the hot young european girls.
It is hard to believe that it took them that long to wonder why there were random cables running all over the apartment and why there were so many smoke detectors in the place.

That's...a little crazy. I mean, everyone knows what smoke detectors look like...and I've never seen any with huge cables coming out of them, going to a central location. I mean, I'm glad they did finally figure it out, that's a pretty sick thing to do, but the entire thing is pretty...weak?
Wow, those 2 are so much hotter than I thought they were gonna be when I clicked on the link. Landlord's a creepy-ass dude, but at least he's got good taste.
I actually can't believe anyone would criticize them for not suspecting the smoke detectors and alarms in that place.
1. Who the hell expects their apartment to be wired with video cameras?
2. They're 22 years old and likely new to living away from home.
3. They're from another continent.
4. It's a rental: where there's usually something unusual, even moreso when it's just a short-term rental.
Smacks of hindsight bias to me.
It did seem a little suspicious. While I'd say that it's not their fault and no one should have to worry about that or be subjected to it, I would like to take a crack at these points.
1. One shouldn't suspect that, but moving in anywhere I would suggest you'd want to take a good look around, at everything. Usually for reasons other than cameras, but if you're being safe and smart, you might find them while checking out other things.
2. Doesn't matter, in fact, you'd think the younger you are the more you'd know about these internet related crimes. I'd say a 22 year old should know about this a lot more than a 55 or 65 year old.
3. Again, doesn't matter, this stuff happens all over the world. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that it happens more in other countries.
4. All the more reason to be cautious. If you own it, you can probably feel more secure.
Again, it's not their fault and no one should have to worry about it, but from what I saw I know I'd be asking questions and checking things out.
As for the publicity stunt comment, my radar went up on that too when I first watched it. Seemed all too perfect. I guess that's just me being a skeptic on the internet though. I'm sure the righteous would love to come down on me for being mysoginistic. On the other hand, I'm just viewing this situation through a lens of a lens. If I knew the parties involved I'm sure I'd understand and view the situation better.
Just looking at them, I'm surprised those two ever caught on.
You mean the two girls who are obviously at least bilingual, and were able to secure themselves summer positions abroad in Tampa Florida? I'm sure they are not very bright girls.
Wow...I'm not sure the guy wasn't exactly trying too hard to be subtle. It raises a red flag that ANYBODY would think they'd get away with smoke detector cameras, extremely obvious wires, and a locked closet.

Many, many rental properties have interconnected smoke alarms. For certain types of buildings, the building code requires them to be connected with wires to each other, so a fire in one unit will set off the alarm in all of the units, and everyone can evacuate. A large wire coming out of a smoke alarm in a rental makes sense.
There are wireless connected smoke alarms available, but the government took a long time to update the building code.
