The 5th year option must be picked up after the 3rd year. So in year 4 the player knows if it is his final year. Seems fine to me, the team can see the player over 3 years before deciding.
The top 10 picks all get the average of the top 10 players at their position. 11-32 get the average of the 3rd through 25th player at their position.
The only wiggle room there is how much of this is guaranteed.
There is also a rookie salary cap, so the subsequent rounds will need to fill out that cap.
The savings with the rookie cap will go into a fund for the NFLPA to distribute as they see fit - apparently this is the money going to things like the "Legacy Fund" (the fund for disabled retirees)
Edit: I got this data from the pdf posted above by CoR

Do you guys usually do some sort of NFL survivor pool on here? If so I want in, even though I'm a Canucks and Titans fan.

Just glad that football is back!!! Can't wait for the games to get started, so many good teams this year and there are about a dozen teams that can go the distance.

Where do you see that bit about 22.03? Is that a dollar amount?
I just did some searching, I found some article mentioning that Newton would make roughly $35M over 5 years. To me that's still way too high($7M/yr), but the fact that its quite literally been cut in half from last year is at least promising.

It is right in the pdf linked above.

As a quarterback, the 1st pick in the 2011
Draft may earn $22.03M over four years,
plus an option year salary of $14.3M
(assuming a 5% growth rate)...

Really is going to be a frenzy out there for team management...from getting everything up and running logsitically, for training camp, workouts, playbooks, training regiments in a few days. Tickets and all that sorted out on the administrative side. Then, coaches shaking hands long enough to pat you on the back as you leave as the team has found someone else in the massive pool of FA's that are out there.
My Seahawks have a lot of that going on...the second or 3rd most cap room to play with in the league (something like $20mil+...and not a cheap team like BUF or CIN historically, so they can and will spend), a veteran QB who may/may not/probably will/ be back (for continuity if nothing else at this point), and holes along both lines...a new OC and other coaches.
This from a team who had an incredible amount of roster moves last year in the first place.
How each and every team management performs in the next 6 days, more so then any other year, will go a long way in determining, at least for this season, the immediate fate of their team. Get it right and get the lower tier FA guys on the cheap since there are so many out there, and you're well on your way...wait omn your hands too long or get a name player who is terribly out of shape for some reason after this offseason, and you've blown it.
Very interesting to be sure.

Thanks, I clicked on the link before but must've missed it. So just over $5M/yr for 1st over-all pick, still a little high but definitely reasonable. About time they fixed that.
I'm sure the players didn't have a tough time voting it through either, as less money spent on rookies leaves more money for re-signing vets. I remember a few years ago when LJ was still a machine in KC, him complaining because they couldn't afford to re-sign him at the time when he was the best RB in the league because they spent so much on whoever their top 5 pick was that year. Definition of a broken system.

So they still get paid a ridiculous amount of money for doing 0 in the NFL. Every league needs to get it right like the NHL in terms of the rookie wage scale.
This is still far better then the massive holdouts, and demands for 7 year 80 million deals.
The rookie wage scale should be escalating salaries like a 4 year deal for picks 1-10, year 1 2m, year 2 3m, year 3 4m, year 4 5m.

Sweet just realized I am going to be in Vegas for opening weekend in the NFL. Maybe I should learn how to bet on sports while I am down there.

Disagree completely. Why would the NFL model it's contracts model after a league it dwarfs revenue wise? That's like saying Peyton Manning shouldn't make $20 mil a year because Crosby only makes 8. Hell the way it looks right now Sam Bradford is being paid just right on his first contract. And I know there are busts as well. I think they did well and met in the middle.

And it begins....Heap could be a beauty pick up for someone unless the Ravens re-sign him.
Quote:
Although NFL teams cannot officially cut or waive players yet, reports are already surfacing that the Baltimore Ravens will free up salary cap space by parting ways with wide receiver Derrick Mason, running back Willis McGahee and tight end Todd Heap.
ESPN reported the anticipated moves and the Baltimore Sun reported that the Ravens informed nose tackle Kelly Gregg that he would be cut on Thursday.

I'm very interested to see what the Ravens have planned with all this cap space they're clearing.

I guess it sounds like they are using Friday the same as the traditional UFA signing period - you can't speak with another team's pending UFAs until the signing period begins.
|
Looks like I was incorrect - any team can speak with any UFA/RFA/etc, but no offer sheet or contract can be offered until Friday.
