IIRC he's used a cane for a while now.

His walking with the cane was more laboured than usual. I would say he's lost a significant amount of weight since the federal campaign, and his walking is significantly worse.

She's alright but she's no Ellen Ruth

You would be hard pressed to find another politician that works as hard as he does, that is for sure. He has been a political staple in this country for a while now and it will be kind of weird without him there.

I think that the NDP had its boost due to voter unhappiness with the Liberal Alternative and that Jack ran a really good teflon campaign.
He's the face of the NDP and socialist movement in this country, but it took him years to achieve this, I don't think that they have another person in their party with his strength of personality, unlike the cons who could fall back to several pretty strong party members.

That is the party's problem right there. The NDP didn't win 100 seats. Jack Layton did. The people voted for the man, not the party, and I do not envy whoever has to try and hold that together one bit.

I'm honestly surprised that he didn't hand the reigns over to Thomas Mulcair instead of a lady with at most a few months of actual federal politics.
But then again, Mulcair tends to float on the left side of the looney circuit.

Well the other problem is that behind Jack Layton is nobody of any significance. I suppose Thomas Mulcair is the only known name who takes a run at the leadership? Its pretty dismal for them in that sense.

I would not be surprised if some higher profile left leaning Liberals are sniffing around. Layton leaving permanently would create a huge power and experience vaccuum.

I was thinking of this, but I doubt it will happen until Layton steps away permanently.
Why would you cross the floor in hopes of power if there's a chance that the power comes back?

I suspect Bob Rae will suddenly discover that he is a ND after all...

Wish him the best. He's a great politician and arguably killed himself doing this last campaign.
Though...honestly, I wouldn't hold hope if I supported the NDP. Jack looks a step removed from being a skeleton

The doctors haven't been able to determine exactly what kind of cancer it is yet.
Very sad news.

Whether you agree with his political agenda, or not... you can't argue against the fact the he loves Canada.
Get well soon.

That's generally not good. My understand is that it's generally 4th stage cancer if the primary location can't be found...or extremely early stages (where the tumour isn't noticeable enough to be found).

From his appearance, I would say it's beyond the early stages, but I'm not a doctor.

As someone that is dealing with a close family member going through treatment of a very dangerous cancer, my heart goes out to him and his family. Hopefully he can fight this nasty disease.

I'm hoping that the fact that he is monitored so closely because of his prostate cancer that they picked it up early.
