Maybe he's stepping down to head up a new outreach group tasked with negotiating with the Taliban.

Quite frankly from his appearance and his family issues with cancer, I don't think he will ever return.

Uncalled for. This man has a high chance of not surviving his cancers. His speaking is labored, his movements are shaky. He looks very strained and weak.

Since I can't watch the conference, I had to speculate. And the post was made prior to any announcement if health reasons. I saw a quick headline and nothing more.

He looks very sick. Good to hear that his battle with prostate cancer is improving, but very sad to hear this new development. Regardless of his political views and how I may disagree with them its terrible to see someone go through this.

He had the cane all through the election campaign. That's nothing new is it?

I don't like his politics, and I'm not on board with his beliefs, but I wish him nothing but the best going forward. Cancer is a miserable illness and nobody deserves it.
Get well soon Jack.

That was my thoughts as well. Even if he survives this round (and we all hope he does), its probably a good time to get out of the stress and spotlight.

He has been using a cane since he had hip surgery but it might be helping him walk if he's weak from treatments.

My first thought on this is that Layton's resignation (and looking at him, I doubt it's temporary) could stop the NDP entirely in its tracks. Ultimately, that will be his legacy, I suspect: he took the party to heights it is unlikely to ever reach again. One hell of an achievement, regardless of what anyone believes about his politics.

Ouch! As much as I didn't like the vitriol he added to politics, I wish him the best and hope he makes it. People mentioned he has a family history of cancer... so did his prostate cancer just metastasize or is it something new entirely? Can't watch the news at work.
Wouldn't he already have been on chemo?

He didn't say specifically, except for it wasn't the prostate cancer again.

Jack Layton is the NDP. That party should have barely more seats than the Block Quebec and the fact that they have 103 seats in parliament is testament to how good of a leader he is.

The trouble with Jack leaving the leadership is that he was an incredibly strong personality that kept the fringe elements of his party in line. As much as he would deny it, he is very much like Stephen Harper in that he's almost the heartbeat of his party that can tell other members to shut the f up.
I think that the NDP had its boost due to voter unhappiness with the Liberal Alternative and that Jack ran a really good teflon campaign.
He's the face of the NDP and socialist movement in this country, but it took him years to achieve this, I don't think that they have another person in their party with his strength of personality, unlike the cons who could fall back to several pretty strong party members.
From a personal standpoint, I hope he gets well, I think that the Canadian political scene needs alternatives even if I completely disagree with them
But I think that this is the height that he's going to achieve as he was going to have to be a bit more defensive in his next election campaign now that he can be called to the carpet because of his higher profile.
Get while soon Jack I want to see how things turn out, both politically and personaly.
