That was tough to watch. Just a train wreck in the 9th.

Patterson deserves a huge amount of blame for the Rangers winning run. Man, did he misplay that deep fly ball poorly! He jogs back, then slows down his backpedal, then realizes, 'oops, better get going again' and, voila...it's over his head.

Guy's damn frustrating. He's made some pretty good defensive catches recently, but amidst that, he's also had alot of horrible whiffs & failures on deep, but very playable fly balls to the outfield on a number of occasions this year.

I was at a wedding reception tonight so I didn't get to see the game. A friend of mine showed me the score going into the bottom of the 9th. I explained to him why I wasn't so worried. If Davis or Moreland get on base then you have a tough lineup to defend against (Kinsler, Andrus, Hamilton, Young, Cruz).

Look at what happened.

Good piece on Gillick and Alomar going into the hall together. Imagine if the Randy Johnson deal had happened?

A GM excited about his own demise. The worst trade ever by the Padres.

I always thought of it as a trade that was good for both teams. I wonder what the stats say.

Presumably those aren't all losses? Like the save was blown but the Jays came back to win one or two? Is that tracked?

The Getting Blanked podcast touched on this; including a game where the Jay's 'pen blew two saves in a win.

If I recall correctly, their stats determined the Jays have the 8th best 'pen in MLB.

Well McGriff had 2 and a half pretty productive years with the Padres, in a ball park that wasn't all that hitter friendly. Finished top 10 in MVP voting the two full seasons, and led the NL in home runs the second year. Although Tony Fernandez was okay in San Diego, he found his way back to Toronto in 93 and was much more productive offensively as a Jay, and was getting to a point where he had to switch position.

Really the deal there was that the Padres held a major fire sale during the 1993 season in which they traded pretty much every guy earning any kind of salary who wasn't named Tony Gwynn. In 1992 the Padres had the 4 tops with Gwynn, Fernandez, Gary Sheffield and McGriff at the top of their order.

Ultimately though the deal worked for the Jays because Alomar and Carter hit what are probably the two most memorable post season home runs that allowed those Jays teams to win the World Series those years. Although one could argue Ed Spragues pinch hit 2 run homer in 92 should be there.

If a team makes a blockbuster deal 2 players for 2 players and the 2 players that team gets only stays for 2 years? That's a bust.

They could have kept Carter and Alomar at least 5 more years if not forever.

I don't know the detail of the 1993 fire sale.. sounds like inept management.

I believe the stat was tweeted but they are something like 6-11 or 7-10 in those blown saved games, which is actually a decent record. Normally blown saved games would result in a very poor record.

I've always thought Sprague's HR was overlooked by many...........I guess comparing it to Carter's and Alomar's I can see why. But it was massive.

I would think that says more about the offense than the pitching though. If the pitching was as good as previously discussed, there shouldn't be near that number of blown saves
