It is a summer camp, but a political one, organized by the one of the Norwegian left-wing parties (the one currently in power). It takes place on a island outside of Oslo every summer. There are about 560 people on the island now.

A man dressed as a police officer fired several shots. Several injuries have been reported but the situation is unclear. It's not known whether this is connected to the bombings or not.

Usually the kind of people who do these things are attempting to set up totally radical (and no way practical) communist, anarchist, or facist governments.

I wouldn't attribute these acts to any legitimate or rational political cause just yet.

And the latest update:

NRK is reporting that an unknown group called "Helpers of the Global Jihad" have posted a message that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian periodicals publishing the Muhammed cartoons, according to Andrew Boyle, a journalist in Norway.

I can't believe that this is (potentially) because of some cartoons. This planet is really frakked.

This is one of those news events that goes from bad to worse, and I don't think we are even close to hearing all of it yet.

BBC's web site has a good live feed (video): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14254705

They have just reported several fatalities at the camp. Cowards.

Seriously? For some cartoons? Like come on! You don't see Christians or Buddhists respond this way to some lousy cartoons or even written stories insulting their beliefs.

No you don't and I don't believe that you would see many moderate Muslims reacting this way. I don't want to get into another religious debate, but the people that are doing this, aren't really Muslim's, they're gullible angry idiots who have been indoctinated into a radical version of their religion.

More from Utøy

Man dressed as a policeman started wildly shooting everywhere. Witnesses say 5 to 10 people were killed, but this has not been confirmed.

Witnesses say the man had several weapons including an shotgun, a hangun and an automatic rifle.

Many people jumped into the water and started swimming for the mainland. Norwegian police are encouraging any with a boat in the area to be on the lookout for them.

Police say they have strong grounds to connect this with the bombing earlier today.

20 ambluances and 4 air amublances have been sent to the island

You have to give the devil his due, if these actions are connected. Its an attack probably being carried out by 5 people maximum, and they've thrown Norway into Chaos.

Its a really well thought out plan. You blast the building, draw the police in, then attack another target.

Not to mention a remote location that is difficult for police, military, and medical personnel to access. Sadly, the only thing that says cowardice more than attacking unarmed civilians is attacking children.

Are you surprised? If this is jihadist and/or al-Qaeda related groups, they've been using children as pawns in their deadly game for a long time, both as victims and as perpetrators of horrendous acts of violence.

Their indiscriminate nature knows no bounds, which makes them monsters beyond any reasonable doubt.

Was this an island on a lake, or off the coast? I hate to think people were swimming in the North Atlantic for the mainland.

It's hard to imagine the level of cowardice and hatred it takes to open fire on unarmed people like that.

BBC news feed is interviewing a Norweigan hospital worker (or doctor, not sure) . . . Speculates more than 100 people have arrived at his hospital for various forms of injuries.
