Default Musician's Thread

Hey CP,

I have a general question and it did seem to fit anywhere else so I thought I'd create a thread where the musicians of CP can come together and share and ask questions and such.

So I'm trying to locate a Maestro Vibrola piece to put on my Gibson Blueshawk. And the internet seems to be giving me greif on finding one, or even getting a ball park price for one. This is what I''m talking about (my guitar is black though).

Image is sorta big so its in spoiler tags.

Spoiler!

Goto http://www.blueshawk.info/intro.htm and e-mail/ask around? Looks like that was a unique one that only came on some special editions of Bluehawks and not sold separately. You might be able to find some vintage ones if you search for Gibson tremelo/vibralos but they may not fit on the blueshawk. Maetro is a modern brand for their trems.

May be the obvious and already exercised option, but did you call someone like Long & McQuade or Axe?

Thanks Hack. From a quick look around on the site it seems anyone that has a question about it doesn't get answers. Very odd. Too bad because it looks pretty slick.

That looks more like a Bigsby than a Vibrola to me. Vibrolas look like these:

http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=maestro+vibrola

That looks like a Bigsby B5 that was maybe rebranded for Maestro (or perhaps a Bigsby copy). Here are some B5s:

Yeah thanks opendoor, I just came across those. That is likely what I'll be looking at.

Ok my issue is more or less resolved, feel free to use the thread for any and all musical inquiries. Ill start the conversation along by posting my guitars.

Gibson Blueshawk

Ibanez Artcore AS-83

Obviously I'm a bit of a sucker for hollow-bodies, but I've been wanting to ad a solid body to my electrics. I've been seriously considering buying an Ibanez Jet King, anyone have any takes on it? I understand they sound quite nice and I love the way they look.

Guitar stores are pretty much hopeless when you are trying to find specific things for anything that isn't a generic super popular model that is currently in production.

Sadly, I kind of stopped playing guitar about two years ago. Had no musical friends, not that much fun to be playing yourself to youtube videos and backing tracks.

I'm a hammond organist and I've been looking for a Leslie preamp pedal. Anyone got one kicking around? (6 pin please!)

I really want to get into some Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, vintage EP, etc. jazz playing on the piano. Where should I start? I am lost.

If you can't find good vintage gear, (which I have owned plenty of) consider buying a Nord series keyboard.

Currently I am playing a Fender rhodes on the bottom with a hammond clone on the top. You can find some great sounding rhodes samples in the the Nord line. The one thing you can not replicate is the feel of the wurly and Rhodes. Sometimes as a Hammond guy you can even miss the smell of the Tubes and electrical....weird, I know!

Decent gear will come later, I can deal with shoddy sampling or synths for now. The EP2 setting on some generic Yamaha's actually have a decent Rhodesy sound on the el-cheapo side of things if you can get that nosey overdrive sound (not sure what it's called) if you hammer the keys hard enough.

I just want to get into that style of playing and I don't know where to start or what to learn or try to play or any artists or pieces that I should check out.

great thread.

I am trying to find some one local (alberta) that will do custom molded in ear monitors.
I have impressions made already but am reluctant to send them to the US and chance never seeing them again.
Does anyone know of any company in the province that makes these?

Herbie Hancock
Jamiroquia
Stevie wonder

I could add so many more. My meat and potatoes sound is all funk and groove!

Oh, check out the Crusaders (joe sample) and Tower of Power (chester thompson).

MIDI Keyboard and Reason. Has a really solid Fender Rhodes. That is my favorite keyboard instrument by far. I really really want a real one.

VOX Continental or a Farfisa Compact for me. Nord has their Combo that sort of continues that '60s garage vibe.

I actually find the Rhodes pretty unsatisfactory on Reason. A genuine Rhodes has a completely different sound when you strike a key harder and you get very different tones depending on how you setup the actual instrument and the amp you use. I've found very few software synths or sampling that actually does this.

I'd compare the Rhodes in Reason to how most software/synth guitars sound compared to the real thing in that they only express one flat sound instead of the rich and wide variety you get by playing a string many different ways.

I do all my playing via USB keyboard so I need to find a decent software Rhodes until I can manage to get a real one (which probably won't be for years).

What I'm talking about is basically similar to guitar distortion. When you press a key hard enough on a Rhodes, you get a distortion or bark. You also get nice distortion on really strong bass. There's an "overdrive Rhodes" patch on Reason but then it's all that kind of sound and you lose the warm chimyness of playing keys softly.

Just got back from a recent string of shows. I ended up playing a Nord c2. I am totally impressed with it. Here's the funny thing about Nord organs.....theres no drawbars on the thing, just buttons.

I've looked around the internet for a solution and all i've found is a box with sliders on it but not drawbars. Close but not quite right. Any Nord players out there solved this one yet?

I'm a purist when it comes to hammond organ sound and feel so getting it right is pretty important!
